Is Sawley Marina or Union Warf Better for First Timers to Canals AND UK

We have the opportunity to try either Sawley Marina or Union Warf. We are intrigued by Sherwood Forest, but heard Union Warf was prettier. We are experienced boaters, if that's a concern. We are not from England and want to experience the English countryside. Any thoughts much appreciated!

Just for a vacation! Thank you so much! I'm not sure we will be able to get Union Warf (depends on RCI units available), does the flooding happen at Sawley in June at all? That's when we would be going. Also do you recommend the train or renting a car to get there from London? Thanks again! smile.png

Wouldn't expect trent to flood in June. However it is possible. July 2007 was shut for 2 weeks. I don't know whether you might be offered an alternative if that should happen. Maybe worth asking? The company that used to run those boats would turn the boats round at Shardlow on the canal if the trent was in flood. They may still do that. Again worth asking.

Yes sawley very near long Eaton station and direct trains from London.

Really not near to sherwood forest.

English countryside certainly very pretty from union wharf but think pretty from sawley too even though locks can be hard, it's the double locks that can be tricky and they are much easier if you share them which should be easy to do as plenty of other boats around.

One further point, there 's very little in the way of food shops from either base. Again check what the base suggests.

Enjoy
