Air filter type and position

A little less flippantly, air filters on small marine engines only really came in when conversions of industrial or vehicle engines became popular, these engines already having them fitted.

Even today, some small marine engines don't have any air filtration - some Vetus/Mitsubishi models, for instance.

Well that takes care of the filtration side of my question, but what about the low pickup of the air at bilge level. How advantageous is that? Or is the difference minimal?

Keeps the bilges sweet (think wooden boat). Also on the Gardner the long tube is (should be) lined with felt, which quietens the airflow.

I'm not bothered about keeping the bilges sweet (think iron boat?), just want what's best for my 4LW. Felt lined tubing sounds interesting. But is it available anywhere? Edited by jenevers
