You might be surprised just how long what you consider to be a bodge will last.

I would personally go down the epoxy filler route.

It that there are so many holes, small ones and large, more small. 

When better weather comes i will look over it again then decide i guess what to do.  

Epoxy fill hole then a coat or two of epoxy....did i think of that before, oh i dont know. to much going on in the head.

As above - in water this year, should last for years knowing your standards.

Re laminate externally, on the water 20??, should last for years knowing your standards.

If you use an epoxy filler I wouldn't even bother with an epoxy primer. Just use a normal primer and antifoul.

It will outlive you that hull.

Now then now then. 

All these little jobs are keeping me busy over winter now. Electrics for a start, no big job but making sure i understand how to use the new Volt/Amp meter. I was going to finish it properly but i forgot to get two 25/5mm stud cable terminals.No shop in the 10 miles of had then so again i have had to order online. No big deal but this si why i have so many jobs that need finishing properly as local shops which i try to use dont sell them.

Same with the Sapele veneered ply. I waited for 3 weeks then they received White Oak, thy said they would send it back and put it on fast track service, that was two weeks ago. I called them and they said they cant get it in now until they order enough from the supplier. Could be weeks again sooooo.

There is a supplier about 20 miles away and i cant get to them with there opening hours and to get it delivered will cost the same as the sheet itself. 

As i only need about half a sheet if that i am going to see what i can do with the off cuts i have.

First job was for the cool box draw door. I sectioned in into two and put Sapele strips done to cove the joints.

I laminated with contact adhesive to a 4mm ply backing.

You will see in this pic the frame around the edge of the aperture for the door. I am NOT happy with it but that is the only way i could do it with what materials i have.

I am going to have work something better out. Only bit i am not happy with is the shade of Sapele, does not match from vertical to the horizontal.

So fairly happy there.




Now the cabin step i have been doing bit by bit, it is near done now, just a quick rub and varnish and it good as done.

With the step though comes the charger as i have decided there is enough room ( just ) for it to go under there with the water pump. I made a frame for it to bolt down to from the ally strips i got some time ago for when i made the........? i for got now lol.

I made a few corner supports for the front corners to stop it from tipping forward , not a lot but feel better to step on.

Front panel slots down and is held at the bottom by dowels standing proud of the bottom frame.

The tread then goes in and is held in place with more dowels sitting proud at the sides.

Then the rear slides down.

Another job was to fit 240v, socket on the left and Garage RCD on the right, this feeds 6amps to the charger and 16amp to the two sockets on the cabin. You will see them ( if you already have not ) Just below the draw on the cupboard wall above the cool box cupboard.

I have been busy on the galley but as yet it is not finished i will wait to show you as i think it will be a nice surprise as it was for me........ok until i got he laminate for the galley. I like the worktop a si have varnished it with Le Tonkinois, it took four coats but look well. I have even tiled the splash back, nearly anyway as the up stands are drying as we speak. In the front room must to T`s annoyance but if needs must.


As i sad earlier in this update i have had to come up with ideas for the shortage of Sapele veneer. 


Now what can these be for ?


Eighty 50mmx50mmx4mm Saple made from the off cuts.

And i am well chuffed with the table saws accuracy, to say it is so old and i made the mitre.

It is not easy to cut and not chip the veneer and has the cut off length fly across the room so i jigged it out a bit by clamping a lump of Iroko to the fence to get the length i needed.

That is about it i think. 

The main areas to be done as in the heads needs lining and cabin needs varnishing and lining still cant be done until spring to temps to rise. That will be a crazy month a si have other plans now, which i cant not put the finalizing of Faffer`s launched back any more than it has been.

The hull work, i think i have decided to fettle the areas that need to be by Epoxy filler instead of a fully re`laminate the hull below water line.

If i remember any other bits later i will up date again

Always alive and kicking in one way or another. I have been busy with work ( employed ) mainly being stuck in the traffic with the weather over here in the last week. Also doing a few jobs that have come in for `waynes boat work` venture, that is the name now. 

I have sorted some business cards which i was going to post up a sample that i have gone with but i think its against rules as it will be classed as advertising on here. 

I am looking forward to picking my car up that i got a week or so ago to fit out and sign write. Its an old one but in fair nick and ready to go. 

Here it is when my brother picked it up for me and took it to his house for now as i am out of room now until i sell my Mitsubishi FTO 

Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.9D, chose this as a good cheap car to run and at £450 cant grumble. I will get a full on test when i pick it up as its a 130 mile drive home.

Lets see now on Faffer, what has been done. To start off i had ago at my own mosaic tiles from the off cuts of Sapele veneer, this didnt go to plan due to so many folk passing by and talking and my blood sugars dropped so i stopped for 20 mins like i do. The glue i was using was setting so it all went a little wonky as i was rushing before i stopped.

That has been binned now and i have been cutting up the rest of the Iroko into 50mm tiles 5mm thick. At least this way i can sand it back smooth and treat. This is for the top of the cool box cupboard and also the cabin table. Thought it mite look good so lets hope so. 


Lest go back in time now on a job i started about a year ago

That blinking Houdini hatch, some mite remember i rebuilt it as this was the third Houdini i have had that has leaked around the usual areas for these hatches, the glass seal perishes. I have used Creeping Crack which did work for a short time, a very short time and in the end i didnt any leaks at all 

Not wanting to splash out around £280 on a new Houdini or other hatchs yet 

Here is what i started to do and near finished off now. 

I used the lower Houdini frame and made my own top. 8mm thick plastic, cant remember which type now, either Acrylic or perspex or the other type.

I used a bottle of water with a small hole drilled into the side a few inch`s above the job to trickle water over the cutting line to help the cut which works a treat to keep the cutting line clear and aid the smoother cut for clogging, which is easy done with out the correct blade which i didnt have.

Once all cut to size i got on with the hinges. I had to rebate for the screw heads to sit in the plastic as it will be touching the lower frame which is not good.

Like i do i used the original locking handles off the Houdini. Here i have made thick spacers from Iroko, i cam make all one sat a later date if need be these should be fine though, the original ones sat to low. Here we have M5x10 Interscrews and SS M5 coutersunk screws.

These are the outer plate made from 25mm x 3mm aluminium, backed with 2mm Neoprene to help keep water out. Once all finished there will be Sikaflex 291i used in the thread and around the Interscrews.

All done but for the edge trim which i need to make a jig to form 12mmx12mmx2mm aluminium channel around. I have a spare sheet of 8mm plastic which i will be using to do this. Then once that is made and fitted i will decide on which profile seal to use. 

How can i forget but it will also be cleaned back, MMmmm polished maybe like the window frames are.

I am tempted to fit the bars across the screen as the Houdini have, still not decided on that, still an easy and quick job to do if i decide to later.



Now as it is spring time......not that you would think so, i am looking forward in the next month or so to get stuck into the hull and get t repaired. I am going to repair with epoxy filler instead of a full hull over sheath. From research epoxy filling will be as good as an over sheath with poly resin.

Sorry to say very little has been happening until the weekend gone with weather and the new venture along with another one i am hoping will take off a bit, not enough hours in the day at all now.

Now the temps are up a little i managed to laminate the heads floor. 

Two 450grm CSM used and later a flowcoat will be added once made good. I mad esure the edges went far up from where the panel edges will be

 

 

Then once dried a trim back along the door edge and rear inspection hatch. Then around the drain. Again the Dremmel is a great bit of kit for these detailed jobs. 

I have also fitted the cladding but no pics as i need to finish the sink area yet and wot not be before i show it done. 

 

 

Oh yes the cupboard top

 

Now you my remember me making it from the off cut Sapele/ply i had and it didnt go to plan, so i used the off cut Iroko instead. Again 50mmx50mm and around 5mm thick, it varied around .5mm either way.. 

 

Faffing about gluing the tiles in place onto 9mm ply with Cascamite.

Then after it had dried it was time to buy a new toy  i chose the Bosch PBS 75a belt sander to get the tiles leveled out. due to good reviews really a si know nothing much but they sand lol. I saved a tub of dust from the dust box, very good bit of kit and mixed it with resin to make the filler. Used it to fill the small gaps in between the tiles and then sanded back again. 

First with the belt sander and 80G then 120G and again with a palm sander to finish off.

This were it will sitting on the cool box cupboard. I will be doing the same for the drop table/cabin berth. Just a bigger scale. I am waiting for the Sapele hockey stick trim trim to dry then i mite varnish it before i fit it, just no patience

So a little done but getting there bit by bit still.

 

I am more concerned on making the canopy now and the hull repairs, when they are done i will be launching it, the interior can be finished when afloat if need be.
