Marine ply or steel?

Featured Posts

My day hire boat has 2 smallish lockers, one on each side, right at the stern. The covers are currently painted plywood. The paint is peeling and the ply is starting to open up, they need replacing.

I'm torn between using 3mm steel or 12/18mm marine ply. I'd paint the steel but varnish the ply, should look nice. There's a curve to cut on each locker cover. I could probably shape the ply myself but the steel would be beyond me.

What do you think the best option would be?

buffalo board but you don't need a full sheet - try a trailer manufacturer for some offcuts - they use it for the deck of the trailer.

seal the edges with epoxy resin - that is where the rot starts, even on buffalo board (hexagrip is the same thing).

You could also trim the edge with aluminium or hard wood angle held on with silicone sealant. Protects the end grain from damage and then becoming absorbent.

what I did - it's good
