You may laugh but Scottish Canals who look after the canals in Scotland for the Scottish people, have been writing to owners of boats which they think are scruffy telling them to get them tidied up. Can you see this approach being tolerated in Englandshire? Such things as a faded canopy, an unpolished gel coat and faded paintwork have all been subject to the letter.

These letters and Scottish Canals policy of no consultation before writing to boaters telling them how much their licence and mooring fees have increased is causing a lot of unrest up here. Apparently SC engaged consultants who compared mooring and licence fees in places down south (like London) and that is what SC based their figures on, and , No, they won't let us see the consultants report.

SC appear to be more interested in property devopement than in maintaining the canals and they seem to see boaters as a nuisance to them.

Come back, BW Scotland, all is forgiven!

This reminds me of some idiots here in Spain. The local authorities here have a thing about installing water features on big roundabouts. Every now and then some idiot chucks a bottle of fairy liquid in, resulting in a similar outcome. Takes a week to clear it as all the pumps and filters need stripping down costing a fortune.

Do they tolerate it in Scotland? Where's the enforcement if SC are indirectly told to bog off. Their duty is to the maintenance of the canal so that people who make the investment of buying a boat and paying for a licence can use them. It's a cheek, you'd think they'd try and remember that non of it is free.

They can only apply what boaters allow them to get away with

You would think so, wouldn't you but it is not easy to get your voice heard when SC are masters of operating divide and rule and have taken away the twice yearly opportunities where canal users could ask questions and try to get answers from senior management. However, all is not lost and meetings are being arranged with the Scottish parliament and boaters who care about our canals have plans to improve the situation.

"Scottish Canals" is British Waterways, its just a trading name, they couldn't carry on after the CRT was formed, mind you seeing the way CRT are going one wonders when it will revert!

I think they are doing it the right way, why have "consultations" when you are in charge of running the operation. The government doesn't consult you before whacking vehicle tax up or upping the VAT. I wish CRT would act the same and just be what they are "the bosses". If people don't like then they can always go away. Its about time ANPR was installed on the waterways to check movements and catch the overstayers and licence dodgers.

That's what your MP is sposed to be there for

I think that the ANPR route could become the thin end of a very divisive wedge. But saying that it could bring in shed loads of cash for the canals. Speeding fines, pay per mile ( the more miles the more you pay), pay per lock ( £1 per lock - the Warwickshire ring costing about £100 extra on top of your licence + milage charge to maximise the new income opportunities). CRT won't have to worry about licence dodgers because they will be so busy raking in the cash from all the new technologies.

And you will have to fit running lights so the the cameras can pick up your plate. The people that don't move very far will be asking for a deduction as they don't put as much wear and tear on the system. Oh, just had a thought £10 per tunnel + bonus if the tunnel is over, say 5/8ths of a mile due to the higher maintenance costs - god CRT will be rolling in it.

Filling up with water - there could be a metre on that!

I can't wait...

One should be careful what one wishes.
