Suggestion: Make search default to forums, not topic.

This seems to catch a lot of people out including long standing members.

 

Not that surprising as virtually every other forum I've seen, a query in the search box searches the forum by default.

 

Any thoughts? Gotta be technically possible, as any other forum shows!

Agreed. The default is dumb.

I once used the search members (for a virtual pub quiz) and the results were completely bizarre!

The default is 'forum' if you are looking at multiple topics, e.g general boating or new content, however if you are reading a specific topic then the search will default to 'topic'.

It would be sensible to provide a permanent link to the search site on Google, which I can never remember the link for, seeing as the forum search engine is so poor. Or at least, remove the "4 character minimum" on search terms. Try searching for "BCN", for example...

True but if you're reading a topic and want to search for something, there's a very high chance you're searching for something that's not in the topic you've just read.

 

Every other forum I've seen, if you're reading a topic the search will still default to 'search forums', because probably 95% of the time, that's what people want to do. It catches out people who've been on here for ages, so newbies don't stand a chance really.

 

Also as Paul C says, it would be useful to be able to search for words shorter than four letters, even three letters would do, eg for '12v' and a whole host of TLAs
