v and g engineering

Hi all,

Finally found a boat after a long search. Outside seems solid with good paintwork and a great beta marine engine that's dry as can be. We put a deposit down this morning. The inside needs a lot of work and I know some people stay clear of an owner fit out but we have really struggled to find something this solid.

My only niggle which I can't throw is the builders. It was built by V and G Engineers in 2001. I can only find one other boat claiming to be built by this company and zero about them online. It is registered etc etc but this is bothering me. Ring a bell to anyone. Bit late now I suppose but better the devil.

Thanks, and thanks for all the help you have all been along the way.

H

How do you know that a hull built by an unknown engineering company is "solid".

Did you knock the sides?

Did you check the welding - under the rubbing strakes as well as on top??

Did you see how the sacrificial edge of the baseplate is wearing, or rusting??

more importantly, have you had an out of water survey by a decent surveyor??

I hadand lived on a V&G Engineering built 56 x 10.6 widebeam 'Apple of my Eye' for a few years 2005-2008 built around similar time to yours...

Had zero issues, excellent build and needed nothing doing to it...Nothing else to add really but no complains from an ex V&G owner here!!

Sigh of relief, thank you.

Sorry my wording was obviously a bit presumptive. Obviously solid is a hope but it has a recent survey by a good surveyor (we will get our own regardless) and above the water is well maintained so it's the best 'guess' we've seen so far.

Hope it follows through that way!

Assuming V&G Engineers / V&G Engineering / V&G Boatbuilders / V&G Stables (?) are the same thing, then the boat listing indicates they built approaching 40 boats, so are hardly a low volume builder.

That said, I don't recall hearing of them.....

Hi. We are the current owners of Apple Of My Eye the boat mentioned by andeberg and like him we cannot find any faults at all with the design and build quality, even things like the paintwork are still looking good on our 10 year old boat.

Like you we did have some initial worry's over not being able to find much information about V&G, as a internet expert i did a lot of googling and found they closed in 2009 about the same time the price of steel went up, this from what I can see this also took out a number of other boat makers so can be excused. What we did find was a few of their other boats on apollo duck similar size and layout and all in good spec, seeing these other boats put our mind at rest a lot allowing us to put in an offer and go through with the survey and eventual purchase.

here is the sale video of when we bought her last year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmvzamgEw0E , you can also see many pictures of her on our blog http://widebeamlife.com

And looking at the video, that's still wearing the same paint which was done in 2005 and still looking good altho I had a crème sign written panel on the rear with our names. Quite a few internal changes, mainly new worktops, bathroom sink and overhead kitchen display cupboards removed plus utility room altered...Has it still got the remote generator in the engineroom? still with that useless wind generator I see :-)

I sold it to an old chap in Maghull, Liverpool presume you bought from him?

Certainly stood the test of time being lived on there for 10 years solid!!

Hi andyberg, yup we bought it from maghull in december of last year and the remote generator is still there, although unused so far as they key has been misplaced and we tend to be on shoreline.

do you have any pics of her when you had her, perhaps if you do you could email them to me.

A big zombie thank you for the info you listed on here, Alan, all that time ago - a boat I am interested in is on that list and being able to dig up the info on here has been a big help. I think I now know a little more about the boat than the broker!
