Permit to cycle

Featured Posts

There are signs along the Lancaster canal saying you need a permit to cycle!

I've got two, one recieved because we were moored on the K&A at the time, and one as volunteer for the K&A Trust.

Back in the 1960's if you did not have a boat, you had to buy them to cycle on the GU towpath @ 5/- a year. and it was monitored by Wateways Policeman, from recollection he was John Williams on his 150cc BSA Bantam.

Cyclists are a bloody menace in my opinion.

Public highways aside they ruin footpaths... A pathway that would be an easy walk requires a detour because 80 plus kilos displaced via two thin tyres reduces a country path to soggy ditch. ?... I cant be arsed to go on, but it pisses me off and youre a bunch of inconsiderate bastards.

Also Lycra really?..... Apparently I have a small penis because I drive a 3ltr twin turbo.... I wear jeans, so I just might be hung like trigger, you never know... Lycra? Ffs I can tell if youre circumcised.... bellends the lot of you.

Awaiting ban.

There is way too much offence taking and banning in the world in my opinion. Agree with you about the cyclists. It's a tow path, not a cycle path.

That is a funny post, You say that there is too much offence taking then agree with someone who is taking offence.

I haven't seen that many folks towing on the tow path! Is it a walking path or a jogging path? A fishing path or a mooring path? Thinking a little more, it is probably a path where a horse is led by a bridle and hence a bridlepath and we all know what is allowed on a bridlepath. smile.png

And the one above is even funnier. But I might get banned or even arrested if I tried to reply. ohmy.png But, I will take the 80kg as a compliment.

Oh Dear!! Cycles have been used on the towpath almost since they became affordable, every working boat I knew carried two for advance lock wheeling. The old BW regulations issued permits for cyclists and boat licences permtted the carriage of two cycles for use in association with navigation.

Whilst i agree that in some parts of the system cycles racing along the towpath has become a problem, it is a problem which we can lay at the feet of BW for accepting not insubstantial sums of money from Sustrans and Local Authorities for upgrading towpaths for cyclists.

"That is a funny post, You say that there is too much offence taking then agree with someone who is taking offence."

That's a good point !rolleyes.gif

What I really mean't though was people getting offended at what people SAY and then banning or reporting them. I ride a bike pretty much every day, but I do it on the road and on dedicated bike paths. Riding for a day out in the fresh air on the canal is kind of different than doing it as a high speed, lycra clad, hobby or as a work day rush to work. There is a river not far from my house and these buggers are travelling along the bank there at 35 to 40kmph whipping past children on their three wheelers out for a ride with mummy and daddy!!

Although the forum has a fairly light touch with it's approach to content and opinion, and we enjoy a divers range of debates, discussions, rants and reports.

However, as we aim to be a family forum, and have children also read our pages, we will not tolerate foul language, (amongst other unacceptable behaviour), and will warn members and, for repeated offences, will suspend/ban them.

Some cyclists are a bloody nuisance, but not all, indeed some boaters are a bloody nuisance , but fortunately not all!

I do agree about the footpaths though but as I am only 70kg I obviously don't fall into the category of inconsiderate ba*****strd!

Yes - that is how it used to be. CRT have removed the requirement: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/contact-us/faqs/cycling

At one time, you could download the permit from the BW website and fill it in yourself

Richard

Wasn't the requirement removed because mass disobedience by cyclists in refusing to buy permits meant that BW had to give up?

A lesson there for boaters with respect to boat licences perhaps?
