Polishicebreaker
There's always been a 2 inch diameter hole on one side of my bow way up near the gunnel. No idea why it was there, maybe for an anchor chain or water inlet. I'm just painting the boat so was thinking to weld some plate in there and paint as I can't think why it would be good to leave it as it is. I suppose it would be easier to stick a skin fitting over it but it wouldn't have a function except to cover hole. Alternatively, could I have it as my water inlet or is it unusual to have one on the side of the boat? Too many questions. Thank you!

Err... wouldn't you then have a hole where the old water inlet was? And no it's a daft idea, the hose would keep falling out. I'd just weld a patch over it if I were you. Or cut a disc the right size, weld it into the hole and grind it off flush if you are feeling clever! MtB
Phil Ambrose
"Hole in my boat" are words I never want to hear. Phil Soz no sensible suggestions
MtB
I wonder if it was originally a water tank filler, but the filler was moved because the hose kept falling out! MtB
Ray T
Well fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, Dear Henry Well fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, Dear Henry Fix it! Not in a gas locker is it? If so I'd not weld it up.

If so I'd not weld it up. Au contraire, iIf it's in the gas locker, it NEEDS welding up. Or sealing in a gas-tight manner at least, to meet the BSS. (Never mind the presence of the drain hole in the base!) MtB
Peter-Bullfinch
It's not an old breather for a water tank is it?
Polishicebreaker
Thanks for the quick response. It's not in the gas locker, also now I remember it isn't for water as the skin fitting was on the bow deck. I shall cut a disc then as suggested and spend all day trying to make it day welding and grinding trying to make it look smooth Cheers!!
b0atman
maybe it was for the bow cannon for when you see the day boat pirates
MtB
Lol yes, this reminds me. Whenever I see a 'pirate boat' these days I amuse myself by fantasizing about engaging with them on a proper war footing, boarding their boat and stealing all their beer. .. THAT would take them aback and remind them what piracy is really all about! MtB
Tom Richmond
I am considering cutting a hole in either side of well deck to use for aft leading spring lines, running to a cleat on the inside. It means they won't be a trip hazard as we tend to come and go from the pointy end. I believe the technical term is a hawse pipe, can anyone confirm? Paul C
A picture would help visualise where on the bow it is, and thus what it was for.

Grace and Favour
Maybe a previous owner of your boat had stored a box of 2" holes in the bow, and when moving them, hadn't noticed that one of the holes had escaped?

Polishicebreaker
Holy Moses! Well I welded it up nicely but then slipped off my steps onto the riverbed. 4 stitches in my arm and 3 hrs in west Middlesex hospital, and all before lunch. tommytelford
Perfect plug for a 2 inch hole is a beer barrel bung, I put one in when I removed my old gas fridge and it has been there for over 10 years

Polishicebreaker
too for an overflow as its 2 or more feet above tank. I reckon maybe for an anchor chain? Whatever it was, it's lost it's holiness!
