'Inspire' Rust Converter

Have just aquired ths product,it has a Phosphoric acid ingredient.

 

Would like to know if anyone has any views on it,or are the Vactan/Fertan types superior?

It will work fine provided you remove most but not all of the rust as the Phosphoric acid converts the rust from ferric oxide to ferric phosphate. You know when it works as the treated area turns black.

I've always found that Jenolite takes a lot of beating, another phosphoric acid one.

I've restored many vintage cars and swear by Milkstone Remover (basically Jenolite but a cheaper, bulk buy at a fifth of the price) rust treatment. I recommend getting all loose flakes away first though.

Yes do remove loose flakes but do make sure a little rust discolouration remains as it is this that the phosphoric acid works on to produce ferric sulphate and thus produces a surface which will not rust, it's a bit like anodise surface on aluminium ( a form of aluminium oxide which will not corrode)

I use straightforward 40 or 45% Phosphoric acid solution, (bought on a well known auction site!) It works as thoroughly as any branded preparation, dries within the hour, and I then commence with my chosen paint system.

 

Not let me down yet.

 

 

 

Edited to add: It's also the active ingredient in a leading brand of toilet "descaler", so I use it there too.
