How can some get away from paying for a license

Featured Posts

Going up and down the Llangollen canal i see boats with out any license. one the other day was last licensed 2005

However lots of folk do actually have licences but just don't bother to display them for some reason (a rebellious or anarchic streak perhaps?). Presuming the boat has a visible index number (which is a requirement) you can go onto the CRT website to their boat checking page and see for yourself if it has a licence. Chances are it will have.

CRT have indicated at the highest level in meetings that provided they can identify a boat from its index number they have no interest in seeing paper licences displayed, and no longer make any use of them when boat checking.

They would very much like to discontinue paper licences, and apparently it is only people like you obsessed with the fact that people are not displaying up to date ones that makes them shy away from this obvious cost saving.

(Just saying, like!).

Someone told me because CRT is a charitable trust you don't have to pay? but didn't sound right to me? wonder if that could be a reason? because they live on it what action could they take?

Are you bored? Or trying a bit of a wind up or perhaps both?

That is a bit offensive to the OP who is making a reasonable comment in a non-provocative way.

CRT have provided a licence checker to allow boaters to check if boats are in fact licensed. From reading the latest Boaters' Update it seems that it might be helpful to CRT to learn of boats that are not licensed:

  • "During the first quarter of 2014/15 (Apr June 2014) website users reported 304 sightings of unlicensed boats. Of these 24% have subsequently relicensed and a further 61% were already in our enforcement process, 3% resulted in new cases being opened for action, 7% of sightings were in relation to craft seen on water not enforceable by us and the remaining 5% were boats which were not identifiable through a valid boat index number but the details have been passed to our enforcement teams for further investigation. Keep up the good work! "

If you're bothered and want to cut out the first 50% of the argument by finding out whether a boat not displaying a licence is actually licenced or not, you can note the index number and run it through the CRT checker.

You will still have 50% of the argument left to have though..
