Hi All.

Was doing a bit of maintenance on my 1.5 BMC last weekend, changed the belts etc.

I've had a loose lever on the Morse control for ages, so seeing as I had the tools out, I tightened that. Realised the cables were quite loose too and after a bit of looking around and poking it looks like the whole system is a bit bodged.

Where they attach to the control end, one of cables isn't fastened, so when you move the lever the whole cable (inc sheaf) moves, rather than just the wire inside the cable.

Other than that, I think the system is in good condition, but a lot of adjustment is needed, ie:

*Movement forward and backward is very stiff

*The engine rev's loads before the propeller is engaged in either direction

Has anyone played with a Morse? any tips? Is it worth trying to de-grease the inside of the cables or is it just better to buy a new set?

Thanks,

Jess

Possibly cable wear, you mention an outer sheath not fixed, will not help, could be the lever itself, cable run kinked or to tight a turn.

This is a cable adjustment, the engine revs should not alter when engaging gear. Also the above.

As you will have noticed there are two cables, one for the gearbox and one for the engine.

Release engine one at engine end, adjust gearbox cable so that with lever moved forward to fully engaged gear position the gear is engaged, then re-attach engine one so that engine is still at tick-over.

Adjust the gear cable to fit with the gearbox lever in neutral and the morse lever in neutral. Adjust the throttle cable with the throttle lever on the pump in idle and the morse lever in slow ahead or astern. That should sort out the revving - probably adjusted when in idle on the control.

Also, try this.

Disconnect the cable where it connects to the gearbox.

Then move the controller arm and see if it is loose or still stiff.

If it is loose, then a drop of oil on the gearbox lever could help.

It helped me.

Awesome, thanks guys, i'll have a good play with it on sat. It's a very old Morse and an old BMC so i'm not surprised it needs a bit of TLC :) The boat is about 35 years old and there isn't much in the way of service history so who knows when the last time it was adjusted was!
