What constitutes "vintage?"

Just wondering as I have a Lister-Petter installed (came with the boat)

I need to replace the head gasket so will refurb while the head is off. To ensure sourcing the correct parts I had to search for the engine ID plate which I found covered with several coats of paint...

After cleaning I found that the engine was built in 1941, now I am no spring chicken but this would seem pretty vintage to me ???

No. 41 00058 LPWS4 A 042

Found this on same forumn. Hope it helps

Hi Chris,

Right I will attempt to explain. Lister engine numbers on engines post 1950 upto 1999 are numbered as per your engine. the first two digits on your engine number 46 = 4 decades and 6 years since 1950, so your engine is a 1996 built engine. In 2000 the numbers went back to 00, therefore as before a engine number starting with 05 is 0 decades and 5 years since 2000.

so the numbers break down as 49 00001 LPWS 4 A044
(year 1999) (serial no) (model) (no of cyls) (build no)

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies guys, that would seem to have cleared that one up clapping.gif

I had read that the first two digits represented the year but seem to have missed the fact that they were also in code blush.png

I will bugger off now and stop cluttering up the "vintage" section laugh.png

We have a LPSW3 and a member of this forum sent me this about our engine:

When your engine was manufactured at the lister engine plant in dursley gloucestershire, I was employed as a marine engine tester.

Your engine would have been fully tested and run in on a dynamometer to the lister test specification LS81/LS145 and would have had a power output set to produce at 100% a power rating of 64nm @3000rpm giving a power of 20.1kw (26.9HP).

Maximum peak tourque was set at 2950rpm 71.6nm

Your engine number4600065LPWS3A047
46 = year of manufacture (1997)
00065 = serial number of engine (65)
LPWS = engine type (Alpha LPWS) indirect injection
3 = number of cylinders (3)
A = direction of rotation (Anticlockwise)
047 = build type 47 (marine canal star)

I hope this is of interest to you. I am very pleased it is still going strong
