Air filter on oil filler cap

Why do some Gardners have them?

As engine crankcases breathe during the engine running there is a risk that road dust could be 'inhaled' into the crankcase during use. Any dust particles such as that would be undesirable mixed with the oil to form a grinding paste. Don't forget that early Gardners only had a fairly coarse gauze washable oil filter (not a highly efficient paper filter such as used today) and the engine would be more vulnerable to road dust on the less than perfectly tarmacked roads of the times that the engines were commonly used in trucks and buses. I'm guessing though that the oil filler filter would have been a later addition as the design improved by 'continuous devlopment'. That's my theory anyway sleep.png
