I've seen it happen with mooring spaces on canals too.

I've just thought that if one of those ships had been named after France's second city, it would have been Pride of Lyons. You wouldn't want to transport a giraffe on it.

Can you make a narrowboat go that fast?

I believe it's surprisingly easy to get the bow of an empty working boat up onto the bank. After all, the front end is barely in the water and has a nice curve to it

It was the pride of Calais I think.

Her bowing out name was 'Ostend Spirit'

MS Pride of Calais was a cross-channel ferry owned by P&O Ferries. She operated the Dover - Calais route between 1987 and 2012. In early 2013, under bareboat charter to Transeuropa Ferries, she served on their Ramsgate - Ostend route and was re-named MS Ostend Spirit. After further lay-up in Tilbury she was sold for demolition in Turkey and beached at a salvage yard there on 13 Nov. 2013.

Thanks for posting the "view from the bridge" MikeT.

As a professional seafarer it's one thing I would want to do, drive a ship up a beach, but also it's the one thing I would NOT want to do, being the man who took a living ship and turned her into scrap...
