Favourite stargazing spots

I was just reading with interest, this article about a new 'dark sky' park http://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/dec/09/northumberland-stargazers-largest-dark-sky-park-europe

 

Does anyone have any suggestions for great stargazing spots on the network?

 

I remember a fabulous night sky by Whixall Moss on the Llangollen. Very dark and a flat landscape, giving a huge night sky.

A little stuffed on the Southern GU but it is possible to get away from the Sodium Glow when you have London behind you. Earlier this year on the Tring Summit:

South Oxford between Napton and Fenny Compton, Middle of the Shroppie, K&A after leaving Devizes until Hungerford.

I was moored at the end of the Wendover Arm last week and it was completely silent with no light pollution. I would imagine that would be a great place to stargaze.

Agreed, pretty much anywhere in the big sky country. We had a memorable night a couple of years back watching one of those meteor showers.

I live just across the border from Kielder, featured in the OP. Certainly I can see a helluva lot of stars when I'm out with the dog on a clear night. I think we can justifiably claim to fall within the 'Dark Sky Area'!

There has just been an excellent article on our local news about the Northumberland dark sky park.

I know this isn't on the network but, the place that made me realise how much light pollution there is around almost all civilsed spaces is a little further afield...

 

The Celtic Sea, midway between Land's End and the Fastnet Rock, somewhere around the Labadie Bank. And the best time of year? The beginning of August when the Perseid meteor shower is giving it max.

 

A clear night lying on deck, can't beat it. A few years ago, in one hour we stopped counting at 50 meteors and the same number of satellites, including the International Space Station. Magical.
