Online map showing electric hook up points?

As ditchcrawler says, most volunteer- maintained map information tends to be woefully out of date.

No, it doesn't.

Boris Johnson opened new "bus stop bypasses" on Cycle Superhighway 2 in London yesterday. Here they are in OpenStreetMap already. Needless to say they're not in Google Maps yet.

New roads in Bicester. Already in OSM. Not in Google.

New bridge across the Wye in Hereford. OSM - yep. Google - nope.

It's like any open source project: the trick is to have a sufficiently motivated volunteer community. OSM has this because cyclists know that, if they put the information in, they get the best cycling maps out. I don't see why the canals would be any different.

So Richard how many times have you emailed "rad56mail-diesel@yahoo.co.uk" and told them how much you paid for your diesel

That's a daft question, Brian, because I don't claim to personally contribute to every single user-generated content site on the web. I contribute to OSM and a few others; and as long as there are enough people contributing to each one, that's enough.

Given that OSM has already mapped pretty much every road in Britain from a standing start, I think your scepticism is misplaced.

No I was just making the point Richard, I bet only a small percentage of the members here send updates to these sites, let alone the percentage of boaters who are not on here. I think you would find the same true of a map

You only need a small percentage, though, especially because electric points don't move much (unless someone uses them as a mooring bollard) whereas diesel prices can change every week.

(The diesel site also isn't really geared up for ease of contribution - it's a fair amount of hassle to click the e-mail link, write a nice friendly e-mail, click send. It should be as easy as "click name of marina, type new price, press submit'".)

So it's quite feasible to have a canal system map which is updated by a smallish number of enthusiasts. The basics of the system are already on OSM, and I suspect once a canal-specific rendering is produced, people will start to contribute more.

The ideal thing IMO would be to include it with the First Mate guides so it has lots of information on it. I would send updates to that but not for electric points as its no interest to me.

It's last year but we found that visitors could not hook up or at least obtain a credit on the clock.

We managed to hook up.

Bought a card but ended up funding a bollard with credit in it. Still got the card in the boat with the other assorted electric cards we have collected!

I'm trying to produce a canal specific version of OSM at http://www.canalmap.net . What you see at the moment is the result of hundreds of hours of work by one person (Me). It will never be up to date it's just too much work. However if anybody leaves useful information, I will try and incorporate it as soon as possible.

So far, for the parts of the system that I have completed, I have tried to show moorings, pump-outs, water points, elsan disposal etc.

This sound like something that an android smartphone type application could be used to manage, including regular updates on a weekly basis. All hosted on Google play. Items such as pump outs costs and locations and price changes at various diesel locations could be included.

Visitors are able to use the electric at Clarence Dock.

Are cards still available at CRT Leeds Office? When is CRT Office open - esp. 23rd,24th Dec? Anywhere else? On-line is no good for us cc-ers! Do any of the permanent moorers sell cards?

Not sure if they are open on 23/24th but many of the permanent moorers do have spare electric cards. I used to get £1 ones just for that.
