Indian built CS2 engines

Following on from Mr.Finchers tooth extraction, I reckon the engine weights are -

RN DM2 1720lbs

Gardner 2LW 900lbs

Lister JP2 1520lbs

Lister HA2 620lbs

Lister HS2 '0000s of tons

I'm not convinced about the 2LW, that doesn't look enough.

And the HS2 is a guess.

What's a Lister HS2?

Ok here goes,

We have built and sold 4 new engines and refurbished (totally) 4 more. We are currently building one new engine and one refurb, all DM2's. We are also re building a DM3 for a customer. And have a further DM2 in stock awaiting refurbishment and a new DM1 single cylinder in stock complete and ready to go. We have parts on hand for many more brand new engines and all parts including gaskets, are available for spares for all D series engines and virtually all parts for the national D series. We do have a national D3 that needs a home.

All our new builds are just that, all brand new parts. Our factory overhauled engines are completely overhauled with all parts checked and replaced with new as necessary, as a minimum we fit all new bearings, pistons, liners and valves and guides. No 'paintbrush' restorations here Sarsons!

New cost including new prm260 is £18995.00 with 5 year guarantee.

Overhauled engines are typically £10,000to £15,000 with 3 year guarantee

No one else can offer this level of warranty nor is anyone else able provide the spares backup of new spares from stock other than the modern high revving engine suppliers.

Weight of a DM2 complete with PRM 260 is 13 cwt £(1456 lbs)

Always happy to discuss customers needs directly on 07812 039110 or answer questions about all things RN. We have a very extensive archive of information on all RN's back to at least the early fifties and all of the original drawings and build sheets for the same. We also have lots of info on where engines currently are, none of this info is computerised(yet) but is searchable by engine number.

We are building a boat with a DM2 in it which will be in our hire fleet when complete. The shell is from Simon Wain and the fit out will be to match this exceptional shell

Think that's everything for now!?

I have bought a new DM2 from new owners this year, I have just installed it into my new shell although the installation is not complete yet. My shell is painted but not signwritten, her name will be Linnet. Regarding cost, the new co. is not vat reg and I believe this is where the reduced cost was made, sit down! I paid £18995!!!!

I'm struggling to remember , met a boat that was winding on the Leicester section , with a brand new RN, think it as called Goliath but might have that wrong i recall a figure of around £20 k being mentioned. sWMBO and I are arguing whether it was this summer or last, think this but a bit whiskey addled at the moment.

Bingo!

for example the Marine Engine Database actually shows the Gardner at nearly twice your numbers, and heavier than the RN

RN DM2 - 1456 lbs - 0.65 tons

It was indeed Goliath, I was moored at Willouhby on the N Oxford last year and could hear something drastic coming a mile off. It passed me at a crawl sounding like it was Thors hammers of doom rather than the new RN in the engine hole. It moored just down from me and next day was towed back to Hillmorton , I have seen them this year, in a normal sounding boat, new RN replacement engine fitted.

Wow what a memory he says as he pours another large Jura. Hope our RN starts and performs as normal tomorrow I did manage to replace the air filter but that's about the limit of my mechanical prowess .

Gardner LW weights can vary widely, because they offered alloy or cast iron for crankcases and sumps, also an original marine LW would have come with a 2UC gearbox which must weigh getting on for half a ton on its own with cast iron casings and reducing gear - the gearboxes were also offered with alloy casings. The full marine flywheel is also a heavy lump, and there were various intermediate weights down to vehicle type.

Having a boat stuffed with bottles of wine from the Jura in France, for a moment there I thought you had been to those hills rather than the island of Jura.

Much more palatable than that nasty usquebae stuff.

GBBS, from your posts I presume that you are connected with the Russell Newbery company. Could you please enlighten as to, when I look at the RN web site, I see a photo of a smiling young lady but nothing at all about engines or boats?

Google is almost certainly your friend in cases like this......

David and Deborah Bixter, owners of Grantham Bridge Boat Services, Hillmorton

Boating Business news linky.

They also seem to own Willow Wren Hire Cruisers, which appears from GBBS' narrative to be the hire fleet where one of the DM2s will end up in a Simon Wain built shell - cool hire boat - I could go with that!

Yes, I remember reading that Willow Wren had bought RN. But that does not explain why the RN web site won't work.

The RN Engine Company web site, (or at least the one linked to from the Russell Newbery Register site), says the Domain Name has expired.

I thought it was working the other day, so assume that's a new glitch.

Perhaps "GBBS" can give us the story?

Yes, I've found the same thing. GBBS does not appear to have a web site, and the engines are not mentioned on the Willow Wren site. So it's difficult for a potential customer to find out anything about them.

Whilst I realise that these engines are a traditional product, I do feel that modern marketing methods such as establishing a web site would make them better known and perhaps would increase sales - not just of new engines but of parts for the hundreds of older RN engines which must be chugging away on the waterways.

GBBS, good to see from your post that you are continuing to produce and restore RNs!

I presume you've seen the few posts in this thread from me and Albion about the likely course of the new version of the RCD.

It looks as though from late 2016 onwards it won't be possible to put one of your engines in a new boat as it is under the current arrangements.

It would be great to know your views on this?!

I agree - when Gardner made their last 2LWs, which was over 10 years ago (maybe 2001?), they were, I think, £16,000, so the current RN price represents good value. From what GBBC says, sales have risen since Willow Wren took over the company, and I see that trend continuing.

I almost wish I needed a new boat, but I do love 'Trojan', so I don't think I'll be in the market for the time being.

That reminds me - a few years ago I saw a boat with a 2LW, which bore a plaque saying that it was the very last one made (the engine, not the boat). Has anyone else seen it? Does it belong to a CWF member?

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I think (WARNING) that either Grantham Bridge Boat Services bought RN and Willow Wren. or Dave owns all three as separate enterprises

A mere technicality. If it pleases you better, the bloke wot owns Willow Wren (along with his wife) has bought RN. That's actually how it was reported in the boatimags at the time.

Curious. I'm pretty sure that he's owned RN for longer than he's owned WW, and I thought he owned GBBS before that
