What have you fettled for the boat today?

Featured Posts

Bought a pattress box (funny name!) to replace the one I broke while fitting my GI. I bought the GI 2 years ago, just got around to it.

Pattress boxes are funny things (the thing you screw 13A sockets to). The plastic ones don't seem to come with knock-out holes for wire access on the sides, but the metal ones do. Always learning something!

I fettled some edges off some tree branches ready for firing.

At the weekend the plan was to sort out the end of our centre rope that had started to fray a little. Taking it into the pub with us we were fairly certain there would be someone there who knew how to do a back splice and could share that knowledge with us.

In fact we stopped at Brewood to visit "Tea Junction" that was moored there. Over a coffee I asked Tracey the owner if she or her hubby Ray could splice ropes. After explaining why she called to a chappie walking past - Hey Des, you can splice ropes can't you?

After a lifetime in The Merchant Navy of course he could. He proceeded to give us a lesson how to do a back splice on our centre line. Of course having had the lesson it is now likely to be years before I need to use that info again so I will have forgotten it by then!

We now have a beautifully spliced end to our centre line which is whipped with what I think he referred to as shooting cord from HMS Ironclad.

But as I didn't fettle it I don't think it counts sad.png

We fitted new fire bricks in the stove and fitted a new water pump as well though

why would you whip a backsplice? You either whip the end of the rope, to stop it from unraveling, without increasing the diameter, so that it will still fit through blocks, eyes etc, or you backsplice it, if it does not need to be kept to the same diameter.

Repainted the non slip sections of the roof last week. Does that count?

Used Johnstons smooth masonary paint. Dead easy to apply with a foam roller.

I used Textured Masonry paint on my roof, and did my friends roof with the same. Pleasing Brick Red colour. The texture is enough to make the roof non-reflective and non slippery, without being to rough to walk on bare foot. Applies with brush or roller, and covers a multitude of minor imperfections. Lasted 3 years on my roof, still going strong last week.

An interesting example of how the meaning of words can change. Last century when I were a lad (cue Hovis music) I used to work in an iron foundry, where there was indeed a fettling shop. It was one of the muckiest, unhealthiest and coldest/hottest places I have ever seen.

Now "fettle" is taken to mean repair etc.as in the context of this thread. As little casting is done in this country today, the original meaning will eventually be lost to the archives.

Yesterday we rigged up a system for securing stern doors and sliding hatch but leaving enough gap for the cats to enter and exit the boat but not big enough for thieves gain easy access.

Some 6mm S/S chain and 8mm eye plates and 2 same key padlocks allows us to lock the doors and sliding hatch in several partially open positions from the inside, but looks like the doors are unlocked from outside.

Also fitted a new washing machine.
