Provisional 2014 events list/dates?????

junior

Featured Posts

Having been to a few waterways events this year on foot, and been gutted I couldn't have attended by boat, having bought a boat now i'd like to try and get to a few next year, and in turn see parts of the system I probably wouldn't choose to cruise routinely.

My 2014 work schedule has just been published and it is first come first served in my company for annual leave. I'd like to get mine in asap to cover the dates of some of the good events/rallies to attend.

To that end, is there a provisional list of dates out for any of the events for next year??

I'd especially like to get to the historic gathering at Braunston and perhaps something onghe BCN (although the fact my weedhatch is a nightmare to get to is putting me off going near Birmingham).

Probably a bit too early for quite a few of them.

I know that for this year I found it hard to know dates for some, even about the time we were moving from 2013 to 2014.

I'm fairly certain there is some "rule" that determines a definitive date for Braunston, but I'm not sure if I know what it is(!) Possibly as simple as last weekend in June, although, if it is that, I don't know what happens in years when half a weekend is in June and half in July!

My best guess is 28th / 29th June for Braunston, but I stress that is a guess.

The Audlem Festival of Transport on the Shroppie, which we organise from Audlem Mill, is on 26/27 July 2014, extended for the first time to the whole weekend. However, the classic and vintage car event, held on the playing field close to the wharf, is only on the Sunday afternoon. We had 38 historic boats at Audlem this year, and hope for around 40 or more next year. This event is now probably the biggest such event in the north, and in terms of boat numbers, ranks high in national terms.

Alan, you need to check the dates you've put for Braunston against the calendar wink.png

Ah,

I took last yeas calendar as a template, and looks like I have failed to edit at least that one!

[Edited last post to correct, and also add the BCLM Tug Event, about which I got a very quick response back from Steve Bingham.]

I can't check any IWA event dates at the moment, as their site comes up as currently down for maintenance.

Tillergirl - we at Audlem Mill organise the boat part the Audlem Festival of Transport (there's 300 old cars etc. too), and one of the unusual features of this boat event is that is what is, solely a gathering of historic boats. There are no trade or commercial stands or boats, except that CRT have a stand (It's their canal!) and for historic boats that enter and have the appropriate trading licence, we don't object if they quietly sell their products from their boat.

CRT reserve moorings in the three pounds below lock 12 for the event, but you are more than welcome to moor and trade on the 48 hour moorings between locks 11-12, or on the 14 day section below lock 15.

Anyone who wants to enter a historic working boat should contact us on 01270 811059.

I have an Event Calendar on the RCTA web site. It only carries events where trading is allowed, so you wouldn't, for example, find Audlem Festival of Transport on there:

As I have said, there's no problem with trading at the Audlem Festival of Transport, but it has to be outside the three lock pounds we use for the event. Bearing in mind that this is probably the only event held on a lock flight, there is obviously a limit to how many boats we can fit into the available space, and historic boats do take it all. Trading boats are welcome above lock 12, or below lock 15. Just turn up and trade - no entry forms, charges or formalities (but equally for that reason, no reserved spaces).

Cropredy Festival (waterside music festival) 7th to 9th August.

Shackerstone Festival (lots of historic boats, traction engines, various displays) 6th & 7th September.

Junior, regarding your weed hatch, may I suggest that you get a hinged lifting section installed in your rear deck for easy access to the hatch cover? We had one on our last boat, and one day we'll get around to having one on Trojan too.

Can you confirm the month (Sept) for Alvecote. I have August in mind.

Yes, I'm guessing anyway, but you are right I've put the wrong month.

Because of it's age, I can't edit the post with the last list, so will have to keep repeating in newer posts, as changes or corrections come in.

Some events are still my best guess and are marked - [GUESS]

Fri 18th – Mon 21st April – Ellesmere Port Easter Gathering

Fri 18th – Mon 21st April – HNBC Easter Gathering – Foxton

It's ok, I've got quite good at clearing it with the hook on the end of the pole (unsure of it's proper name).

I did ask Braunston about fitting a flap but they said I would then need rain channels and it would all go rusty etc.

Another May Bank Holiday event:

IWA Northampton Branch Boat Gathering Moves to Braunston

IWA Northampton Branch plans to hold its annual May Day Bank Holiday Boat Gathering at Braunston in 2014 – the first time it has been intentionally canal-based in a history stretching back to the late 1970s.

The usual venue has always previously been on the River Nene at Becket’s Park in Northampton, originally being organised as a publicity-generating event to focus attention on maintaining navigation on the river’s Westbridge Arm at Far Cotton and later to promote the waterside at Northampton. However, the last two years have seen the cancellation of the Gathering as a result of river flooding, water supply problems on the linking four and a half mile, seventeen lock Northampton Arm, allied to declining support.

IWA Northampton Branch Chairman Bernard Morton says: “Feedback suggests a switch to a canal-based event seems sensible. Suitable sites for such a gathering in our area are limited, but Tim Coghlan, who runs Braunston Marina and is one of our loyal supporters said: ´Why not come to Braunston? I can find some space for you,´ a generous offer we quickly accepted.

“Importantly, it also gives the Branch an opportunity to promote itself in the far west of its area where many of our members live or keep their boats and who perhaps considered Northampton to be a little too far away to cruise to for a weekend event, especially in view of the heavily locked Arm.

The Gathering, which is open to IWA and non-IWA members, will run from Friday 2nd May to Monday 5th May. Centred at the former historic Nurser’s Dock on the old Oxford Arm at the Marina, moorings will also be available on the main line of the canal. A full range of attractions is being organised, including evening entertainments, a boaters’ auction, guided walks, quizzes, games, a real ale bar and much more.

For entry details please contact Tony Clarke.

More volunteers are also needed to help organise the Gathering, both before the event and during the weekend. Anyone interested, please contact Bernard Morton on 07785 375787.

Before I start a new thread, can anyone point me in the direction of any old threads relating to the BCNS 24hr Challenge? I might be able to find the info I'd like.

I've tried using the search function for 'bcns 24hr challenge' and got nothing.
