Valuable equipment taken from weather balloon by canal

As was explained - they were delayed in their launch by Air Traffic Control so by the time it landed it was too dark to go blundering about farmers fields in searching for it. Imagine your reaction if you were the Farmer paranoid about your crops. I understand that in the morning the field was identified and the Farmer duly contacted and was helpful.

Imagine the reaction of the farmer if the box had landed in a field and wasn't found in time, but when it came to silaging a few days later, the forage harvester 'found' it and promptly jammed, resulting in a couple of hours delay and a couple of tons of contaminated silage to sift through, too. I imagine less than friendly then. Or, the box was shattered and it was a grazing field it landed in, a cow found it and cut her teat on a sharp edge, ending her life as a milking cow and giving her a short but spectacular career as a beef cattle.

As with Chinese landerns, random objects falling out of the sky onto farmer's land is to be discouraged.

Hot air balloons are okay - but do you know what hot air balloon operators do to meet the approval of farmers? Were the scouts planning to do the same?

Perhaps said miscreant isn't as thick as we all hope they are, either knew there was a tracker, from recognition or it said so on the box.

Scarf and/or parachute was used to ensure no prints were left, and then removed to ensure no DNA was was left either, educated thieves we can do without.

After 926 views, your theory is IMHO spookily close.

So do you have form in crime drama or for real?

Edited to say in time it took me to poet this the viewing figure went up to 1026........

Still no better theory though.
