More on Pubs

Featured Posts

As a newbie to the forums, I am presently addicted to surfing through all those that catch my eye as being of interest to me. You may already have this covered but just in case: There is a lot of info on pubs in different topics. I think it would be really useful if the pub info could be indexed under a waterway heading.

I am presently on the Staffs & Worcs and it is some years since I last passed this way. If I could look at a pubs thread and then define say, the S&W that, I think would be really useful.

Has this already been done, perhaps I'm not searching the forums efficiently?

Problem is pubs are closing and changing hands all the time.

Yes, I know and it is a crying shame, supermarkets and cheap booze, high rents imposed by breweries, etc. it hardly pays to be a landlord these days but some are still making a go of it.

What I was getting at is that the members are, it seems, really up to date and it might be a worthwhile exercise to start again at some designated location in the forum, perhaps in a proforma style of: Waterway, pub name, beer type (brewery & cask or keg), food quality and range, accommodation and general observation, or some style that gives the info we all would like to know.

In the past, the knowledge that a good pub is at a certain location has determined my cruising plan.

It could be built up over a short time with the cooperation of the members, rather than some poor oil having to wade through the present stuff and sort it. What do you think?

There is a pinned thread 'Best Waterside Pubs' thread stretching back to 2004, with trhe latest posting by Goliath 3 days ago. http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14743&page=22

Yes, seen that Mac of Cygnet, but you have to wade through dozens of posts and still not find a pub on the waterway you are cruising. All I'm suggesting is that an organised list would be beneficial to a lot of members. Wouldn't you agree?

No reason why it couldn't be done, but there is a site that does it already.http://www.canalandriversidepubs.co.uk/Staffs-&-Worcs.htm

Ah.....manna from heaven. Thank you Midnight Rider, a person after my own heart. I have looked and as you say, the pubs are there. That then, answers my question....

I compile http://www.canalandriversidepubs.co.uk and try to keep the database up to date but as readers will appreciate keeping the entries current is a mamoth task

As musc as I would like to visit every pub at least twice a year, this is not practical for physical, financial and liver reasons !

I would really appreciate if any forum members would e-mail me with any changes/closuresre-openings around the system and I'm more than happy to contribute to a seperate subject in the forum with any information that I have

Update sent today and will try and remember to make a note of each pub visited and check the corresponding info on the web site.

Keeping a site like that is a never ending task. Good luck to you and hope others help keep it up todate if only to report closures
