Licensing your boat.

Having decided to spend some time on the thames this year, a month ago we decided to upgrade to a Gold licence. Our standard licence expires at the end of this month.

So I took particular care in completing the application and all appeared to go swimmingly. The cash duly left my account and in due course an envelope arrived from CRT. I know I should have examined the contents with more diligence, but I stuffed it into the boat folder, to take with me to the boat a few days hence.

Got to the boat and opened said envelope in order to display the new licence.

They had printed on them, valid until 12/12 !!!!! Now I know that I can be a little vague, but even I know it is 2013....So rang the Leeds office and replacement disc's with the correct date theiron were promised asap. Job done.....well no.

Afew days later I got a letter from CRT, stating that my licence expired in december 2012 and basically invoicing me! Not a happy bunny I then spent an inordinate amount of time on my mobile trying to get some sense from them.

All is now ( hopefully) resolved. But my faith has been somewhat dented!

Some people are so selfish, I can't believe you don't want to pay for last years licence as well. How are they going to pay for Evans leaving present.

Gosh. Never thought of that. How very remiss of me.

Gold licences always have run from 1 January to 31 December so it never been worthwhile getting one any time after the end of January.

Not true!

BW used to give full credit for any unexpired portion of a BW licence that was surrendered at the time of getting a Gold Licence - not sure if the CaRT do the same as of course my licence now expires at the end of December.

Their ineptness never ceases to amaze me on and off the water..

A couple of years ago they sent us someone else's license by mistake

and even after many many phone calls and emails they never did succeed in sending ours.

So in the end we just displayed the other boats one all year!

Think this is still the case...we got a Gold Licence last year and if I remember correctly got some money back for the unexpired bit of the old (ordinary) one

I agree but this would have not applied to Johnmck as his current licence expires at the end of the month so no credit against a new Gold licence.

Edited to correct spelling mistake

I have never found them to be 'inept' regarding the issuing of licences, like any part of a big organization the licensing team undoubtedly make the occasional error (which some people delight on trumpeting on here) but people rarely post on here saying ~

'guess what, I renewed my licence this month and had no problem whatsoever'.

I think before they are branded inept a sense of proportion needs to be kept.

.

Well " guess what, I renewed my licence this month(well two months ago) and had no problem whatsoever'.

The license arrived within a few days.

But I did get a text reminder a few days later to renew.

Then I got a written reminder to renew.

I ignored both thinking, wires crossed somewhere.

Then I got another reminder!

So I phoned them.

No problem said the woman on the other end of phone, I'll take you off the reminder list.

Thanks I said.

By the way I said you do know I cruise continually?

No she said We have you at such and such address

Oh I said I haven't been there for a year

Did you tell us she said

Yes I said

Can you put it in writing she said

Yes I said I'll email straight away

Thank you she said

By the way I said does it make any difference?

I don't suppose it does really?she said,we just like to know

Ok,I said,bye

Bye she said

I am sure Martin, that should the same scenario happen to you, you would never dream of posting on here would you? This was the first time I have really had cause to contact the licensing team, and it did appear to be left hand/right hand not in communication.

Well I can only really comment on my own experiences

and not only did the wrong licence get sent the year I mentioned,

they also messed up our Trade licence application 2 years in a row,

in fact last year after masses of phone calls and emails we never got the licence at all..

Against a background how many licence renewals??

I don't really see what relevance that has but that would be 6..Original application & 5 renewals

so 50% success rate on their part...not that good really..

Your post was a sweeping generalisation, hence an exaggeration in itself.

There was no need for me to do it.

The truth cannot be an exaggeration

Whilst I have no doubt that your experience is perfectly true, however to say

"Their ineptness never ceases to amaze me on and off the water"..

Clearly implies a more generalised and systematic problem, which would be an exaggeration given the vast number of licences that get renewed each year without any problem whatsoever.

I think he's got the grump because of his bed sores.

Not at all, I am just commenting in response to what I see as some unjust criticism of the Trust and it's staff, I do of course appreciate that's not fashionable amongst some on here.
