Tidal Thames Narrowboat rescue

Beautifully defused.

I was all set to lay out the relevant facts all over again, but you intervened just in time and gave me a good laugh at the image evoked, so I shan’t – it is, after all, hardly in my interest, to either promote greater boater understanding of the situation here, or to assist the authority in dealing with it.

And on such a sunny day I belong outdoors digging out Thames mud down at the Hollows, not stuck indoors in front of a laptop. Thanks for the rescue!

Yes, I shall get back to cutting logs in a moment. They are to be readied for next winter, but on present form, I would not be surprised if I sell more this 'Summer'..

Your properly researched, and reasoned arguments are appreciated by a lot more readers than will give you credit. It is just that the 'half informed armchair barristers' shout louder. Keep up the good work.

We did Gravesend-Limehouse today.

It was deceptively easy and stress free.

Presumably this was with the flotilla of narrowboats doing the trip, accompanied by the safety-tug "Major" in case anyone ran into difficulties?

You make that sound like it was a bad thing? Some boats' insurance companies insisting on having an escort so absolutely fantastic that mt Major could come along, in any case it is quite comforting having along a tug which could pull all of the boats back up stream! I think they dropped down to Southend Pier for Fish & Chips, perhaps that should be the next trip?

Incidentally our insurance is through Nautical Insurance Services and we have cover as far as Barking Creek, when we got in touch with them to ask about going to Gravesend they were remarkably relaxed about it and did not require any additional premium.

Congratulations have to go to the St Pancras Crusing Club for yet again safely organising a trip, it was a real thrill going under the Dartford Bridge in a narrowboat and yes it was deceptively easy and stress free other than trying to sleep as 600' + boats get berthed across the river from you. By the time you get to Gravesend you realise that what you previously saw on the Thames and thought was big is well a bit kayak sized compared to what comes into Tilbury.

I had to go to Gravesend marina to collect a stove I bought on ebay. I was amazed at how many narrowboats were there. I spoke to one person and he said he had done the trip many times.

Crazy in my opinion!

Not really. Sometimes you just have to heed the call and go to sea... tongue.png

If that was aimed at me – certainly not, why would you think so? I’ve always supported the ability of narrowboats to venture into wider waters if properly prepared, and I envy you all the trip. Going as a group just shows extra caution and responsibility; having Major along as well is just more caution and an excellent idea retracting in no way from the accomplishment.

Del has been attempting to make out that it has all been “work” and a huge responsibility, while I have been scoffing at him for traipsing around having fun neglecting the more serious duties of campaigning for the waterways in general. He’s not supposed to be out and about indulging himself with actual boating with the rest of you.

My congratulations on an excellent voyage in excellent weather and here’s to broadening horizons!
