It is low volume to enable it to dip under slalom gates...

...and yet, like many people who take to the water in strange vessels (and often no vessel at all) for charity or just the challenge, he seems to be coping.

The OH's brother recently cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats when it would have been so much easier to have taken a car.

The world needs more guys like this, good on him. A real achievement where ever he ends up. I'd sooner have someone like him in our society than the wailing idiots whoes life is over because they never got passed first base in X Factor.

Aren't you?

Great to see a young(er) person actually getting off their arse and applying themselves to a a devilish challenge.

Get's my vote, I hope he makes it.

The 1000s of people that said I could never tow a caravan to Nordkapp in Norway with my bubblecar just made it that much sweeter when I succeeded

Brilliant! :) Do you have any photos of this achievement? Did you build a special caravan?

We met him two weeks ago at Wolverley two weeks ago. He was launching outside the galleon just as night was falling. He had an accomplice with him in a second canoe, also fitted with outriggers and bouyancy aids made from water cooler bottles. Perhaps they were just practising.

I am a level two BCU coach and have canoed all the world and done lots of sea canoeing. Although I admire his courage, can not see him reaching france in that. The other thing is, the French have now banned canoes crossing the channel in their waters, And the uk coastguards will not let him cross the Dover straights without a escort boat.

The French have banned cross channel swimming in their waters too but it doesn't stop people!

51.508686,-0.456339, i recon it's the industrial estate 150m north of Iron bridge road bridge, the yard with sheets of marble stacked on it.

Agree, didn't there used to be a rottweiller in a cage slightly north in the scrap yard?

Ah yes, but would he not have been arrested for such a dastardly deed?

Well as a Level 2 Coach you will know that you are qualified to operate only in a "sheltered water environment" so I would suggest that doing "lots of sea canoeing", you were behaving with the same spirit of adventure as this chap! You just know a bit more than he does.

The Coastguards and Frenchies is a red herring to folk like him - they've got to catch him and he is travelling well below their radar.

I welcome characters like this, setting off on adventures with a limited knowledge and learning as they go - often by their mistakes. It is the same as the original paddlers Rob Roy et al and people sailing dinghies across the North sea. I am sure that by the time he gets to cross the channel he will have either learnt enough to cross in the right conditions or that it is a crossing too far and he hitches a lift on a bigger boat - folk like him have a habbit of getting adopted by people who recognise and appluad their spirit.

You are absolutely right fast Pat. I lived on the Thames Estury. and would always notify the coast guard when I went out to sea and when I returned. I always carried flares ect. I and not knocking the guy just wondered on what planning he has made. I wish him the best of luck. and slightly envious .But i think I will stick to my canadian canoe :)
