Historic Boats for sale online

I bought Touchwood early 1981, the Dorman was only fit for ballast but I salvaged the Paragon gearbox and fitted it onto a Ford D series engine, with a temporary shed at the fore end and 45 gallon drums full of water as extra ballast we set off for Worsley, Blisworth tunnel was closed at the time so we had to go via the Thames with a detour up the K&A as far as was navigable at the time.I owned Touchwood for 19 years.

So when did the Gardner 4LK and Parsons gearbox go into TOUCHWOOD ? I am assuming pre1999 so during your 'tenure' captain.gif

The Gardner was installed in 1996, originally fitted in an E R F it had been latterly used as a fairground generator, the gearbox came off a Ford 6D from an old fishing boat conversion that had been broken up at Tarleton.

As a bit of trivia Touchwood was on dry dock over the winter 81/82 at the same time as Castlefield was being converted to a motor/ trip boat the rudder off Touchwood was donated to Castlefield as it had come off a wooden motor boat that was sunk down the Aylesbury arm,the fuel tank presumably off the same boat was also part of the inventory I cannot remember what happened to that.

Is the reference to Atalanta in this thread because she is for sale somewhere..? Apologies if Ive missed something here.... smile.png

No.

This thread has gone a bit 'off piste' since TUG No.2 came on the market, with all sorts of references and discussions about Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd. - including a photograph on post 4614 that shows an unidentified small Woolwich butty in use as a cabinless day boat that is almost certainly ATALANTA.

Perhaps the above indicates that this is now a little missleading and there is a need to return to the subject of this thread captain.gif

Well put, Pete.

Topic "drift" is a natural and common part of conversations, and is often perfectly acceptable. However, as this thread exists with the purpose of pointing out interesting elderly boats to fans and potential owners of same, could we revert to the topic please?

Surely nearly anybody who is committed to buying an ex working boat is prepared to wade through a few "off piste" posts that don't directly relate to ones actively for sale right now.

It is a fairly specialist thing to be buying, and skipping over a few posts that may not interest you will be just about the easiest thing you ever do in pursuit of your dream boat.

Pete has already been able to add extra information to his extensive records - I think the diversion is worth it for that alone, as few other people are prepared to invest the effort in trying to have the most complete and accurate record possible.

The diversion has also led me to learn that Pete's records are more accurate than a published book written by those who actually owned and operated the boats in question.

Will I be "warned" if I continue to go off piste, then?

Oooooh, let me think....no, not this time.

Your point is indeed well made. Mine was, if I recall, in response to another member's comment.

Well that puts me in an awkward position as although my records have gained it was me that suggested returning to the subject of this thread.

I felt that although the Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd. conversation was interesting it probably warranted its own thread, especially as it had become unclear which boat was for sale. This was not intended to be political or start a debate on what is allowed and not allowed on this Forum.

My apologies if I have pi$$ed anybody off (especially as I might be on here tomorrow asking for a favour from our south eastern contributors) captain.gif

You haven't pi$$ed me off, at least.

I think most people committed to historic boats, and particularly historic boat ownership, are generally very interested to learn all they can about any that have existed, not just that they own, or might aspire to own.

I also suspect that this thread is of little interest to people who have no real interest in historic boats, so they not are likely to be here anyway.

So is anybody seriously looking for an "historic" to purchase seriously likely to avoid this thread because we have gone "off piste" for a while.

I very much doubt it frankly, but if a someone seriously in the market for one pops up and tells us they would rather the thread never deviates in any way from just boats that are for sale, then I'll reconsider my position!

EDITED: For an important missed word.

I'm certainly not looking to buy another historic boat but I love reading this thread for all the snippets of info about them whether for sale or not. Its ramblings are always drawn back on track whenever a 'new' old boat comes up for sale.

May I suggest that members refrain from discussing ski-ing in a historic boat thread?

Are you unaware of the modern use of the term "to ski".

It has never been more appropriately applied than to those of us who chose to buy old historic boats.

Our financial advisers, who, quite by chance we have visited today, now sign themselves off as "Ski Instructors".

[sKI - Spending kids inheritance - we have done a great deal of that lately, and continue to do so!]

I enjoy this thread - always a little excited when I see someone has posted on it since my last visit :)

...the thread often goes 'off piste' but these have always been added attractions - for me anyway :)

I posted here earlier asking about Atlanta - cant now find that post? - but if that question is behind the references to off piste comments here now, my question was absolutely NOT a criticism - I thought I might have missed a notice of sale.. :)

Is it Atlanta? Or Atalanta?

The topic went adrift when I finally after 36 years found a picture of my beloved old butty with a load on. I humbly apologise for the distraction. Put it down to house fever as we have been on our annual working helliday in the antipodes now 7 months away from the cut and our return to the boat is imminent. I'll go away now and thank you all more history patched together.
