They are all nice. Only one I have seen up close and personal was Kimberley when she was for sale at Braunston in c1995,

Beautiful boat built as a butty by FMC Saltley later converted to a motor by Yarwoods apparently.

Nice

Which Josher bow is the best then? ........ at least 7 to choose from.

The wooden one!!!

I love the lines of the bow on the b&k bows there a little more elegant. But i still cant be a nice wooden bow personaly

Josher bow is a Jaguar, the GU are more like Morris Bullnoses. wink.png

'Josher' fore end is too much form and not enough function, not to mention heavy and old fashioned.

Nobody can deny that the G.U.C.C.Co. Ltd. narrow boats were the Rolls Royce of narrow boats when built - and still are now captain.gif

Ahh but which wooden bow? There's quite a choice of yards and with or without a fore cabin.

F.M.C. Ltd. ('Josher') wooden horse boats and buttys were built by the following:

A.J. Ash, Uxbridge

W.E. Costin, Berkhampstead

F.M.C. Ltd., Saltley

F.M.C. Ltd. Uxbridge

Lees and Atkins, Polesworth

E. Morgan, Uxbridge

Nurser Brothers, Braunston

Rudkin Brothers, Leicester

Sephton, Tusses Bridge

there was also a couple built in Stretford, Manchester, but I do not have the name of the builder.

and in addition there were numerous wooden boats bought in second hand, either from the original Company merger or subsequent take overs and deals captain.gif

A typical envious reaction from somebody not lucky enough to own one!

I'm getting worried here, because what I have just typed above could easily have been posted by a certain Hudson owner, when I have chosen to pass comments on that particular breed of boat!.

(Owning two Grand Union boats is even better, but I am currently learning you do need deep pockets to do so!)

David Blagrove, no less, in The Quiet Waters By, says that the Woolwich design (sorry Alan) has never been surpassed!

I would say forcabin i think the josher forcabins bow look really nice im not so keen on the clayton forcabins or the nurser bows they just look too bulky bit like the guccc forcabin.

I quite like the Saltley or Polesworth bows on wooden boats. But the saltlet bows were very early on so i dont think quite so developed at the uxbridge wooden bows. Ricky bows are very nice but im just not keen on guccc boats find them as said more ford transit build to do a job and a job well. Find the fmc boats more like vw vans well built and nice but not as practical.

What was the G.U.C.C.Co. Ltd. 'bulky' fore-cabin ?

There was only one new build G.U.C.C.Co. Ltd. butty with a fore-cabin, and that was on the small Ricky PHOSPHOROUS - and it certainly was not 'bulky' as it was built in the place of the fore deck captain.gif

My ideal boat would be ricky bow, fmc forcabin b&k hull, cowburn back end with claytons cabin with a 25hp seffle.

If you find one of those ill buy it!

None of the large Woolwich boats were fitted with a fore cabin when built.

GAINSBOROUGH was fitted with its fore-cabin by its current owner in the 1990's, and it is built into the hold in a similar way as those built into some Thomas Clayton (Oldbury) Ltd. horse boats captain.gif

Link just says 68x14.5ft tug. I think its the tom pudding on Alan Pease website. Come down a bit as it was £140k recently.

Nice boat probably rather deep though.

(And just noticed a 1895 unconverted Sheffield barge with running engine has turned up on Alan pease recently. How nice !

Boat porn alert
