Any First Aid Trainers out there?

We need to get a small number of our members through a First Aid course along the lines of that required for a workplace. I'm aware that St Johns and others do them, and we expect to pay, but would prefer to do them with someone who's canal savvy.

I know this is of no help to you but.....

I am a HSE first aid in the workplace instructor and COULD deliver the course. Unfortunately i have another job at the moment so am not practicing.

I was having a little think the other day for the possibilities for canal based buisnesses that were not already in existence. I couldnt really think of any. Do you see a market for somebody to travel around the canal system delivering HSE FAIW courses and refresher courses?

Hmm. The vast majority of boats are privately owned so there's no requirement for H&S or First Aid other than personal preference. The Trust however is also a Ltd Company: we require the persons nominated in charge of the boats to hold a current first aid certificate, and this will also feed into our H&S plan which despite some understandable misgivings from the staunch traditionalists we are about to introduce. (We are working hard not to set any daft precedents and so far so good). I suspect individual boat operators or leisure owners would consider the cost of even a one day couse a low priority on their list of things to spend their money on. On the other hand everyone who goes near water should know CPR so there might be a niche for a low cost half day covering that, fractures and cuts i.e. the most likely injuries.

Jason Day - Sheffield, a forum member may have run a First Aid course in the past http://www.canalworl...=1

Post No 59 http://www.canalworl...p?showuser=4261

We went on a boater's first aid course that he ran last year - it was very good.

I see he hasn't been active on the forum since October last year - it might be better to e-mail him, there's a link to his e-mail address in his profile.

Haha yes - my 2 minutes of fame!!

WOO HOO knew it was! I got readers letter sept 2011 - Yes the fame!! no picture though ya bitch!

It was a very educational article and I'm please you have submitted his name for future use by people on the canal.

I have done many courses on first aid in the work place and health & safety, in fact I currently hold a Nebosh in health and safety, but the article really proved to me that there are specialists within our community that have lots to offer use, and we should be utilising them not paying extortionate fees to so called experts.

If I can pass a message to CRT look to the small gays & girls within the boating world before spending our money on big names and big fees. Yes pay them a good fee but don't pay for a name!

FAW is a fixed syllabus so really it matters not who teaches your FAW course. It takes three days and costs accordingly (yes I need one for work). However the add-ons considered "boaty" may be usefully additionally taught. Do your boats carry a defib? Getting a casualty to professional care, needs to be considered as not all boat places are ambulance places.

The Royal Yachting Association and British Canoe Union both do first aid courses that include items on drowning, hypothermia, cold shock. They are ideal for water based activities, other providers (eg. first aid at work)often do not include these items.

Some RYA schools such as Bisham Abbey near Henley put on 1st Aid courses, geared specifically to the boating environment so they deal in more detail with near drowning, hypothermia etc.
