Canal Event Calendar 2013

Featured Posts

(I'm not posting this in "events" to avoid the delays often caused by needing moderator intervention - anyway it is not about one specific event!).

I'm trying to come up with an events calendar for 2013.

we are not planning to attend them all, (!), but it is useful to have a menu to select from, and other people may find it helpful to.

In many cases I can't find dates yet published, so have been asking for some of them.

Here is a starter list.....

Sat 4th – Mon 6th May – Canalway Cavalcade, London

Sat 18th – Sun 19th May – Rickmansworth

Sat 15th – Sun 16th June – Stoke Bruerne Canal Gala

Sat 29th – Sun 30th June – Braunston Historic Boats

Fri 19th – Sun 21st Jul – IWA National Festival, Watford

Sat 14th – Sun 15th Sept - Stoke Bruerne Village at War

Does anybody have others please, particularly things like Alvecote, Shackerstone, (and Audlem possibly?) and anything planned at the BCLM or Parkhead ?

Just as an experiment I added the Canalway Cavalcade, London to the Events Calendar. I got the message that it had been submitted to the moderators for approval, which makes sense.

Am I the only one that thinks we're underusing this facility?

ETA or is this the "Events Calendar" Alan was referring to originally? Sorry if it is! I've just re-read his post and think I had a numpty moment

No I don't think you are Numpty-ing.

I assumed the "events" forum is just a forum, rather than a calendar facilty.

If I go into it, it is just threads like any other forum, although there are instructions to use certain conventions when posting there.....

I didn't use it, because....

1) I have found anything needing moderator intervention can take a long while to appear

and

2) I wanted to start one thread about lots of events, not just a single one.

The calenday is something different I think. I didn't even really know it exists, despite a tab at the top of the screen

I've not looked at it (yet!)........

Phew that's ok - I was starting to feel a bit silly there! :D

If you click on the calendar it does look like a really good facility - it'll be interesting to see if my addition gets approved by the mods and added to the calendar.

I quite fancy the idea of clicking on it to see what events are coming up.

Yep, as a test I also tried to add just the Braunston show - and got exactly the same - needs moderator approval.

If we are going to use it, I suspect some rules need to be agreed about things like format, whether a date is provisional or confirmed, and maybe other things I've not thought of (!)........

Agreed - exciting though isn't it!

One thing that did occur to me - the Chat facility is on the same menu but was only enabled when Dan paid (and continues to pay) an extra licence fee. Not sure if the same would apply here but it's worth bearing in mind.

Hi Alan, just in case you haven't got dates for these events yet I have just update the Heritage Working Boat Group calendar (don't seem to be able link from iPhone app) for 2013 with the events we will be attending and Shackerstone, Audlem, BCLM are on there.

I have just explored the calander tab and selectex birthdays. Frightening. Lists birthday WITH THEIR AGE. Now everyone can see how bloody ancient I am, particularly the next one. Oh no.....

Are there any historic boat events in august? Maybe Alvecote again? We haven't got a historic boat (yet!) but if we did we would struggle to find an event to go to, we can only escape the Fens in August, essentially, due to school hoildays

Not aware of any yet that are historic boat specific, although I imagine some will be at the Blisworth event.

Edited: to add Etruria Canals Festival

I run an events calender on Google that I use to plan my movements, every time I know of an event it gets put on. You can link it to your own calender on Google and use it for planning. I add events on where I think I need to be on cirtain dates so I can see how it fits into the events - should be slightly easier for me this year now I'm boating full time! lol

Alan - you're not going to the Tug do at BCLM next year then?

Cheers,

Mike

Edit your profile to remove the year of your birth -- then the forum won't know how old you are. It only knows because you've told it!

My understanding is that the main canal event alternates each year between the BCLM and Parkhead.

In the years where it is at Parkhead, (like, this year, 2012), then it is supplemented by the more specialist tug event earlier in the year at the BCLM.

In years where the main event is at the BCL, (like next year, 2013), then I was told the tug event is not held.

We are expecting the next BCLM tug event not to be until 2014.

Our events coordinator has the BCLM Tug Event as the 4/5 May 2013 to which we will be taking Nansen. There is also a further event, which is the one I thought held alternate years with Parkhead on the 28/29 Sept 2013 and that will be in the BCLM as this year it was at Parkhead, this isn't just a tug event though.

Hello!!

ETRURIA CANALS FESTIVAL June 1st and 2nd.

Tried Googling for it, and failed to find anything about it, (and found a provisional date for 2013, that clearly was not a weekend).

Probably me not being diligent enough.

Do you have a link showing details (for next year, rather than a past years event), please ?

I am also slightly frustrated on one or two of my other searches, where I'm finding potentially different dates for the same event.

Think everyone has missed what is becoming the biggest waterway based festival during the year in terms of number of people attending

Stratford River Festival 2013 will take place on 6/7 July next year. Entry to the festival with entertainment all weekend, food bars, craft village, charity stalls and childrens play area. There will also be over 100 boats attending next year and all takes place on the River Avon in Stratford opposite the Royal Shakespeare Theatre - fantastic venue ! Last year had over 40,000 people there

Boaters wishing to attend the festival can obtain an application form (reduced River Avon Licences are available) which will shortly be loaded up onto http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/ which also has a gallery of the past years events

Thanks for that! Have added it to my Google calendar.

Still nothing in it for August though - has anyone heard if Alvecote is happening next year?
