Calder & Hebble now open as from this morning Although the gauge at the bottom of the Huddersfield Broad is still just in the red, floodgates along the navigation are now open. Sorry for not posting earlier - been too busy taking advantage of this!

We've got friends stuck at Castleford waiting for the flood-lock to re-open so they can head onto the C&H. We visited them yesterday and they were thinking in terms of three or four days to wait.

C&RT published this on Friday 15th

Flood locks along the above navigation

Friday 15 June 2012 until further notice

Due to the amount of rainfall the flood locks are shut on the Calder & Hebble Navigation. We ask boaters to take our advice and not move their boat during flood conditions. The rivers are dangerous and it is not safe to navigate. Opening the flood gates when the river is in flood could have serious consequences for the surrounding land.

Up to date information about this restriction may be obtained from the North East Administration Team on 0113 2816860 Monday – Friday 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m., or Freephone Canals on 0800 4799947 outside these times.

In my experience, a day without rain tends to be enough for the rivers to fall.

Which we have had so far today!

Just about true for the Calder, which is fairly short, but major rivers such as the Trent Severn and Thames can take a week or more without rain. And of course it's the rainfall in the upper catchment areas which is important, rather than the navigable bits.

Indeed, it was the Aire and Calder that I was referring to.

At 6:30 this morning at Wakefield, the Calder looked pretty normal but BW still have the gates shut.

Is that Wakey?

Yes, that's the Hepworth gallery in the background. The narrow boat later went over/under the bobbins, and came to rest alongside the Hepworth in a backwater, I was sent a photo by a friend who watched the salvage attempt.

Does anyone please have information on current condition - including the Aire & Calder if possible? We hope to leave Leeds for Huddersfield in the next few days and information on the web appear to conflict.

Just issued this morning:

Due to high water levels the following flood locks are closed:

- Anchor Pitt

- Cooper Bridge

- Battyeford

- Ledgard

The other flood locks remain open, however water levels are fluctuating so we may have to close these later. An update will appear this afternoon.

Well last I heard the rivers were open, but'current condition' and 'next few days' are not necessarily the same! If you register for e-mail updates with Waterscape (is it still called that?), then both the A&C and C&H info is updated daily.

STOP PRESS! I have just received the following:

All Flood Locks on the Calder & Hebble

Due to high water levels the following flood locks are closed.

Anchor Pitt

Cooper Bridge

Battyeford
