soft start for fridge/freezer?

Not a real problem,but each time the boat's fridge/freezer starts up,the fans on the inverter spin up and then stop after a second or two.

 

have always assumed that the fans are triggered by the momentary large load as the freezer starts,then shut off as the load is reduced,once the freezer motor is running.

 

Any one know of a 'soft start' device which could could be installed easily,maybe one that could be used between the 3 pin ac plug and wall socket? :unsure:

How about trying different loads on the inverter to find out what the fan threshold is?

When the microwave is running the fans only start up occasionally,the washing machine does not affect them,nor does henry hoover.

 

The previous ac fridge did not cause the fans to start,the only time they spin up is when the fridge/freezer starts.

 

The inverter is a MASTERVOLT 2kw.

 

I would guess that the 'threshold is approx 1.1 kw.

 

The inverter fans appear to be controlled both by temperature and inductive surges,have checked with the immersion heater(rated at 1 kw),and the fans will run slowly.

 

The advantages to a soft start would be no fan noise at nightime and longer battery life?peukerts law and all that.

If the thing catweasel suggested isn't suitable, you could try inrush limiters basically they have some resistance when cold, so will drop the starting voltage (and power) a little, but this reduces as they rapidly warm up.

 

But though cheap it doesn't quite meet the criteria of:

It'll be the inverter control gear acting to either a heat rise in the power transistors or anticipating a heat rise and getting in first. Our Sterling does it when turned on first thing in the morning. Probably related to battery voltage. One fix could be to improve the air flow round the inverter so that it's cold. I've never seen it as a problem - it means that I know that the fan control is working.

If the previous fridge was AC, whats this one?, might have a bearing. Some fridge motor control mechanisms can cause a VERY heavy start spike, which may make the inverter think its overloaded.

The current fridge/freezer is 240 volt ac.

 

Have always assumed that the inverter detects a heavy INDUCTIVE demand,this explains why the fans only run momentarily

 

Wil look at the inrush limiter,sound a likely solution.
