I wouldn't fancy starting a K3 by hand. This one has no electric starter and there's no magneto etc. for a petrol start.

 

I may be wrong, but it looks to me more like a J3 than a K3.

That is a diesel starting J3. I recognise the boat it came out of. Used to be moored in the river Tove at the bottom of Stoke Bruerne

 

Diesel start J heads are different (no starting valve or combustion chamber, but they still crack between the valves) and even rarer than petrol-start heads. The diesel only start is also a b**ger in cold weather and worse when it's only hand start.

 

I wonder what the contraption round the starting handle shaft is?
