I have a plan for the Sabb, if I ever get some spare time & a little bit of cash before I run out of energy. A bit of semi-retirement boatbuilding.

 

Mind you, everything has its price wink.png

 

Edit - an important step in the plan will be a way to convert a lines plan to multi-chine. I could probably muddle though it by setting up some frames & playing with them, but I'm willing to bet that there's a handy bit of computer software which could do a better job.

I don't have anywhere near that sort of money! I think that's more than I paid for my present tug.

Anyway, it has a 'modern' Sabb, not sure what model, H2 perhaps, mine is a semi-diesel which to me is part of the appeal - as an occasional toy rather than a serious working vessel.

 

Edit - anyway, it's more than 7' wide according to those specs, one aim would be to have somethething that I could play with on the narrow canals if the mood took me.

Edit - the description says it's water cooled!

Plate seems to say it's an LD2, if so it's not very many horses at all. About 7bhp.

I wonder why he has a torque converter. Something I only associate with engines in road vehicles with auto transmissions.

Plenty of Borg Warner Velvet Drive marine transmissions around, many described erroneously as torque converters. Surely its the prop that is effectively the torque converter on a boat though.

Quite. It's a bus engine. Maybe there are difficulties in removing the torque converter and attaching a marine transmission.

 

I can't imagine performance being very efficient with the torque converter still present.

 

Never heard of a "Fitzpatrick final drive" either. Looks incredibly weedy to me. Maybe the torque converter gives it an easier time.

There's no torque converter, that's a standard flywheel housing and a Borg-Warner velvet drive box, just mis-described.

The 'final drive' is an angled drive which enables the engine to be at the back of the boat & level, with an angled prop shaft underneath. I think.

 

The 4LK sumps and crankcases are magnesium alloy, & the sumps are notorious for rotting through. Can be patched up by welding, but it's a specialist job.
