Next up, a Lister "Freedom" twin cylinder engine with Blackstone gearbox for £3.5k. I've never heard of one of these before but a brief bit of research suggests it's the correct name for an FR2. 16hp so maybe a bit on the small side after all....

Price seems a little ambitious to me...

Some would say the same of those who don't know the difference between "you're" not "your".

Greeno, Mr. Wheel!

Mike, FR = Freedom Range (so surely they should not cost anything).

I wonder what other engine abbreviations could stand for:

JP = Just Pretentious

YWAM = Yikes! What A Monster!

SR = Still Running

LK = Like Klockwork

(DFC - ducks for cover).

So called AIUI because it was Listers first new design after WWII when design constraints were becoming 'freer'.

As fitted to NB Melaleuca We get along fine with 16 Lister horses.

and me. It might be appropriate with evidence of recent "as new" rebuild, but there's no sign of that.

"Freedom" was indeed the marketing name for the FR range of engines. IMHO they are are quite underated against many other types of Lister but are robust and reliable engines.

The seller is away with the fairies with the asking price though. An unrestored one, no matter how nice the nackerlaquer repaint looks, is only worth around £750. An FR2M complete with Blackstone box just around £1000.

can't let that one go, there is nothing wrong with a PJ or PJW.

  • 2 weeks later...

From my limited knowledge, its a JP2, not a JP2M.

It has a sophisticated speed control totally overriding the governor:

Otherwise all the fixed speed stuff is there. It's the JP4 version of this that I have been correcting in Reading

Yes that's a bit naughty. Normally even this fixed speed industrial engine would have a spring between the speed adjuster and injection pump lever, which would only be used for starting/stopping. This spring and the governor then work against each other to give the latter a fighting chance of working.

To convert to variable speed remote control a suitable throttle linkage would need to be fabricated operating on a similar spring with tension tweaked to give adequate speed control.

The winning bid seemed a bit high for an industrial engine with obviously no gearbox. Having said that starter conversions come out around £1500. Did anyone here bid on it?

Yes I was staggered. It's not worth a PENNY more than £2,805....
