Being a Seamaster I assume its a Perkins 4-10X and if so have you tried it with the flame plug disconnected from the fuel system. Many flame-plugs seem to be pipes from the main fuel system and if it is a leaking flame plug will keep pouring diesel into the manifold. Personally I would fit a tap in the flame plug feed and only turn it on during cold starting (as we used to when they had the little tin bottles to supply the fuel).

hi yes its a 4108 and yes again we disconnected the flame plug feed so its not coming in there were stumped pre engine rebuild it never happened.post rebuild it pours in.

Hi Nick,

Discounting the flame start, only 2 more ways fuel can get into your 4108,the seals improperly fitted or worn out on the injector pump and the lift pump letting fuel past the diaphragm. I have a 4108 in my boat and as a diesel engineer in plant, commercial and agricultural equipment have a lot of experience with Perkins engines and nearly all of the fuel dilution problems I have experienced have been 99% lift pump diaphragm failures,I have personally never witnessed a flame start failure,I do have a tap on the reservoir of my engines flamestart system as a failsafe, more so for fuel line failure. It must be very frustrating for you but concentrate on lift pump first, inj pump 2nd.Hope this helps.(you will find your problem).

One must now question the competence of whoever overhauled/supplied the "new" injector & lift pump. It just has to be one of those.

If this was done by a paid for mechanic I would be demanding to see the invoices and that they put it right FOC.

If the items were secondhand, Ebay sourced etc. and self fitted I would be sending them to a diesel equipment specialist for a proper overhaul.

It is interesting to note that the incidence of leaking DPA injector pumps seems to be rising now. This is probably due to the seals that had previously swollen because of the sulphur in the fuel now shrinking back to size but are now worn. This applies to DPA and rotary pumps only (BMC 1.x, Perkins 4-10x, Ford XLD, Bukh DV36, Marinised Peugeot diesels).

One possibility is unburnt diesel due to poor condition of rings/bores have you had a compression test done? I replaced liners and pistons on my 4107.

Agreed BUT he says he has had the engine rebuilt. It seems to me that he has picked a "wrong un" to do his work or if he has done it himself has picked the wrong "specialists"/suppliers.

I wonder if there could have been a spacer between the lift pump and the block, (as there is sometimes) this spacer was mislaid during the rebuild and now the lift pump is over stroking, destroying the diaphram in an instant, a bit far fetched i know, but it is an odd problem and even rare things have to happen to somebody!

It well could have, they are there to act as an insulator,a sort of ''heat sink''especially on petrol engines but also on most diesels to stop the lift pump getting too hot,and if left out the pumps diaphram would be strained as you say.I can't remember on your Perkins engine but it almost certainly should have one.Check in your manual.

PS The spacer would be about 1/4'' to 3/8''thick,non metal,a white fibre'y heat froof material.

The manual shows one so its a distinct possibility.

Hi, It is worth noting that whenever an older type injector pump is serviced/reconditioned to make sure Dupont viton seals are fitted as they are designed to cope with low sulphur and bio diesels. Any reputable service agent will fit this type automatically, some will still be using up old stock,so be aware and ask!.I believe that any make of injector pump produced after 1998 is fitted with viton seals as standard.

I had a 4236 on a generator that spewed a large amount of diesel through the seal on the end of the fuel distribution pump shaft where it entered the timing chain chest it filled the sump in no time, probably different on yours but thought it worth a mention

thanks for replying all ideas worth investigating i feel like sherlock homes

thanks ill check that one out ive lost more diesel in sump and over £60.00 oil changes fresh oil etc id rather be cruising

thanks ive informed the mechanic of this and he was going to check this out im desperatly looking on internet ive got a parts book and workshop manual on board but cant get there till next week but this seems a most plausible idea weve had as ive bought a new lift pump and still no change im excited about this and thanks for repling will let you no if indeed it has been the problem all this time.
