For me, The Thames Spritsail barge is the most beautifull craft ever built in the U.K. and being part of the crew of one in a barge match is an experience not to be missed.

I've not had the pleasure (yet) but just bobbing about in the lifeboat, watching them race , was a thrilling experience.

I've recently paid £80 for a tonne of hardwood logs, so in terms of firewood £500 would be an absolute bargain

Carl - I know this isn't a Thames Barge but comes a close second...........the owner is always on the look out for crew when he ventures out onto lumpy water........might be worth contacting if you are wanting the experience of an old sailing barge.

Being a Yorkshireman, the Thames Barge would come a close second, if Spider T was wooden.

looking at the "before" photos, of some of the immaculately restored Thames Barges, this one looks like a pretty good starting point.

Well I do hope Vigilante gets saved. Just stabilised now at least, and then ultimately restored back to a functioning traditionally rigged vessel. Such heritage and the skills required to restore, maintain and sail such a vessel are so valuable in our current pure market driven disposable crap world and will ultimately be so much more durable then the vast bulk of current production and indeed skills.
