Hello out there

I'm Jac, can't say I'm even a newbie yet.

I've made the decision to buy a boat but going through the what and how stage.

Everyone on this site is certainly making this process much easier and quicker.

Hi there

We are Jane and Steve we have a 40ft Liverpool Narrowboat called Childsplay. I have been boating most of my life, but Steve is relatively new to the life( 4years). We started with a 27ft Narrowboat called the Goodlife and found that too small and within a year of having her, bought our present boat. We are keen to meet other boaters and extend our already small group of boating friends. So please pop us an email or get intouch.

Hope to see you out on the cut

Best regards

Jane ( and Steve)

Hello !

I'm Kate and my daughter Georgia is 14. We're new here -been enjoying reading the forums, having a little chuckle here and there and learning loads.

I know nothing about boats whatsoever apart from the research I've been doing. So far have worked out that we'd need a 57 ft, narrowboat which would enable us to explore without restriction. Not bothered about what kind of loo either !! In fact a swish out under the tap would be preferable. This would mean a complete lifestyle change for us ..well as much as land to water might mean...we're pretty used to challenges. G has a rare form of epilepsy which has dominated our lives for the last 8 yrs.

As usual I'm flying in the face (or arse) of convention...hehehe. My ideal for us is to have a boat which would enable us to travel/explore and earn an income at the same time perhaps. I'd like a different lifestyle for us both, one which would be positive for G rather than her trying to fit in to an education system for example which has totally let her down.

I expect I sound like a bit of a newbie..yup I am one. Hugs to all, thanks in advance for all the questions I'm going to be asking...Kate & Georgia xx

hi my name is joy and my partner is called spike

we have purchased a live aboard narrow boat after selling out house and most of our possesions, this was a planned move and we are loving it so far. we have had our 57 foot cruiser just over two minths, we have just come out of dry dock after spending a week re doing the hull and re painting the exterior of boat and might i say it was really hard work as we did all of the work our selves, we both worked through the day and through the night for a solid seven days to ge tthe job done, and it was so nice today to come out of dry docks in chester, to see sun light, instead of being in the dark in a pit, anyway the boat looks all shinny and new in oxford blue and cream, and although i say it myself, a good job done, proper eye catcher, next week we are gong to make our way down south, slowely and hopefully find work along the way, loving living full time on our boat xxxxxxxx

ps this site is awsome for getting practical advice about boats and boating.

Hello

After going on a few narrowboat holidays I've decided to take the plunge and buy my own.

The boat I've bought requires some work to get it into a presentable state but I'm hoping this will in turn give me some useful experiance to maintain the boat in the future.

As I've no previous knowledge of narrowboat maintenance I'm finding this forum very useful with lots of useful tips and ideas. No doubt I will be asking a few questions myself that I don't currently have answers for.

Graham.

Hi everyone,

Just to say hopefully bi the end of this week, i will be the new owner of a 57ft trad shell, all i can say is it floats, as its mentioned on one or two of the forums for having sunk, firstly id like to express my deepest sympathy to those who had lost so much when the previous owners had it sink on them, i could only of dreamt of owning a boat untill now, so i have embarked on quite a project, and all advise and support will be gratefully received, kind regards Martin

Hi Everyone,

My hubby and I are new to boating. We bought a primed part finished 57ft narrowboat almost 2 years ago meaning to finish her off pretty quickly and get out on the cut. Having stripped her back to the insulation and started again we are almost there!. Bare in mind that in all we have probably worked on her for no more than a total of 5months in between our heavy work schedule and the 160mile round trip to get to her.

In hindsight we definately would have taken her out of the water (given the distance, diesel and mooring costs) and worked on her closer to home -but you live and learn.

Hi Everyone on the forum,

My name is Leigh and I have been fortunate enough to purchase a 48ft Cruiser Narrowboat on the Regents Canal in Little Venice, London with a mooring.

The boat is very tired and in need of some TLC and renovation. I am looking forward to bringing it back to life with a refit.

The forums are proving invaluable for advice and information as I am new to boating.

Look forward to meeting some of you maybe in the future.

Thanks

Leigh

Hello everyone,

My name is David and I will be taking early retirement at the end of this year. I have decided to purchase a 50ft narrowboat as a liveaboard and continuous cruise the canals and navigable rivers of this wonderful country. Has anyone made a "checklist" of things to do before leaving the dry land and becoming water bound. Things like post, inland revenue (for pension at 65), bank etc, etc.

Also, what about TV licence.

Comments or help gratefully received

Hello everyone.

I have been looking at houses in Preston for a couple of weeks and a friend just mentioned there is a canal there. So, having lived on boats in the past and having always wanted to own one since, I have made the instant decision to sod buying a house and buy a narrow boat instead. Woo-hoo!

I have lots of questions.

Here's a sample:

I will only be staying on it for two days a week. Will I be able to do that on a leisure mooring or will I need a residential one?

I will only be using it during term time and would hope to rent it out during the holidays. Are there firms who would do this for me?

Hi y'all

I'm Kevin (as if you coudln't tell from my moniker) - been a liveaboard for last 12 months but still very much a newbie. I am in middle of part exchanging my old 40ft cruiser for a newer 57ft semi-trad and lokoing forward to being able to stretch. The cruise down to Apsley from Nottingham promises to be quite a learning curve

Hello,

I am definitely a newbie but have had the good fortune to meet some of the lovely people on the forum at a recent banter in Berkhamstead. Anyway, I could do with some help....just someone to come round and make sure that I'm not totally off the mark when it comes to electrics etc. I have quite a lot on board.....probudget battery charger, inverter, solar panel, wind turbine, morso with back boiler and thermostat....

I'm just a bit bamboozled by it all so if anyone can help me out, and is in the vicinity of Ely, please get in touch.

Thanks,

Mad-runner

Hello everybody!

My name is Pedro and I am new to boating. I've done the Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course and I've finally raised enough cash to buy a sailaway widebeam.

It's not a "on the spur of the moment" thing. I've been planning to buy a boat and moving into it for about three years now, but my previous work situation and other (finally resolved) problems I had delayed my project.

I've started a post named "Buying a sailaway widebeam. HELP!" under New To Boating. If you have the time to help with advice, please do it there.

Thanks in advance.

I am also new 2 all things Barge/Canals & have been looking into buying near future. I am just sending you this message ask what you think!

What I have found out so far Jess, the boats (Used) are not expensive 2buy.. ;) To me it just seems their are lot other costs around them. One seems be the Marina's...

Does the Costs put you off Jess??

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I'm Tim and am considering buying a 21' Viking river cruiser that needs some TLC. It is my intention to live aboard it (I am a little guy with a bike and not much else!). However, I know naff-all about boating and am struggling on finding a place to start. My first stumbling block is finding hardstandings in london (the info on the 'net is overwhelming). If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi we have been lurking here for a few weeks now and asked some questions from you kind folk along the way but now is the time to give a proper introduction as we are very excited about taking delivery of our new boat this coming weekend.

The only experience we have was gained from our parents, they had cruisers and narrowboats that we would occasionally take day trips on some years ago when the kids were little. In terms of what we know, we know very little! In fact if truth be told we are both very aprehensive for what's coming next. At least with a car you take lessons before being let loose on your own.

We were bitten by the bug a couple of years back when in an attempt to get away from some issues at home we found ourselves walking the tow paths around our area just to keep some kind of sanity. We found people around the canals to be very friendly and really helpful and far removed from how the people behave at home.

Lots of visits to brokerages and a couple of boat shows later, here we are! If someone had told me a few years ago we would be joining you nice people I don't think we would have believed them.

Hi, I am new to the forum and about to buy my first boat. Been searching for ages but think I have settled on one. Looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up and doing some decent DIY. Nice to meet you all.

Welcome Redgirl . . . . . it's a rather pleasant forum - and most chaps (& chapettes!) are rather helpful

I trust you've done all the necessary homework in/prior to purchasing your boat - and that it meats your dreams and aspirations
