Hi Skippers,

Looking at purchasing our first widebeam boat and planning on staying on a marina for sometime.

Any advice and help is most welcome !!.

It's not the narrow people, it's the narrow canals you need to avoid. Peeps get upset when you try and take a fat boat where they are not designed to go ...i.e. The north oxford as they cause hold ups and delays.

Definitely. I had the misfortune to follow a really fat wide beam down the Wey and the Wey is a wide beam navigation but this one was so fat it could only do about  2 mph or less in a very zigzag manner. Likewise a particularly fat one likes to moor on the GU in some stupid places. Again a wide canal but once you allow for off side vegetation one is forced to wait so you can pass one boat at a time, no passing that boat and none coming the other way. This seems to becoming more and more common.

Buy a wide beam by all means but ensure its not so wide it regularly creates difficulties for others. If you regularly create problems expect at least some kick-back.

Welcome aboard. What part of the country are you hoping to moor in, I take it you will be looking for a residential mooring which could be more of a problem than buying the boat.

Thank you for the info. We are actually returning home after living abroad for many years, so we are very flexible on locations. We do have alot of family in the south west of the country.

You'll be very suprised how many boats there are around the Kennet & Avon / Bristol area.

Hello, Just introducing ourselves here as we wait for the purchase of our first boat to go through :) We struggled to find the right boat for nearly a year, so glad to finally be making moves now. She's a 53ft trad and we'll be cc'ing and living aboard in the north-west. The forum has been so useful already, so thank you to the folks that put their time in to answer newbie questions.

Welcome, don't worry, you'll see much worse than that on the Rivers & Canals.

You'll be surprised how well it'll scrub-up, What engine does it have ?

It's easier to do the first scrub up with canal water (saves lugging buckets around) and the with Jif (Cif) and clean water. Then a good wax polish and you'll be the envy of your mates.
