Dutch Barge transport fees ?

Hi All ,

Next year I am looking at the possibility of taking a trip over to Holland and viewing some Dutch type barges with the idea of transporting it back to the UK subject to the availability of berthing it at a secure mooring site !

Is there any members here who have either done the same thing or can give me some good advice , for instance , is it easier / cheaper transporting it overland / ferry or hiring a skipper to sail it over ( any ideas on prices ).Set out below are the approximate sizes I am looking at....

 

Dutch Skutsje / Tjalk type barge

Length Approx 13 meters

Beam Approx 3.5 meters

Draft approx 0.8 meters

I would be very much obliged if anyone can help me with this query.

CPL (http://www.cpltrans.com) took my 16m x 3.5m barge approx 28 tons from Newark to Migennes in central France for a very reasonable price considering there was an articulated truck, an escort vehicle and two men involved. We were pleased with the service and the price.

I'm sure there are companies that ship by road, but we struggled in the UK when looking at a DB as they generally exceed maximum weights allowed by road.

 

 

A 13m x 3.5m Dutch barge shouldn't exceed the maximum weight. My boat is 17.3m x 3.6m and although it's a NB style widebeam it would probably weigh as much or perhaps more than the Dutch barge in question. It was transported by road.

Curious to know why you just don't buy one over here and save the cost and hassle... :unsure:

Better selection over there and, I believe, better prices.

 

Probably but definitely worth investigating what's available over here first I would say, it could save a good lump of dosh even set against the cheaper prices over there.

 

If the OP doesn't find something then fairy nuff.

Thanks for the replies , and just to answer MJG , Its like what Chertsey said there is deffinately a much better choice over in Holland and also better value for money ! Although I would still look at whats on offer in the UK like you said , thats why I was trying to determine what the transport fees would be . I,LL KEEP LOOKING ANYWAY.

Hi Mike - we are hoping to hop to the continent in a year or so (Both to live and boat) good to know there may be good value purchases over there.

 

We had/have considered taking our current boat over to Europe but it seems there might be other options worth consideration.

There is a much more limited selection over here, and many come with a mooring, which adds a lot to the price. If you don't want the mooring, things get complicated.

 

On the other hand, it is much cheaper and easier to view a boat that's already here.

 

OP, don't discount the possibility of finding somebody to do the deed for fun. I might be interested if timing etc fitted. But I'd want to do a test drive first to make sure everything was tickety-boo, and I'd want at least two crew - one of whom I could probably rustle up. I'd assume you would be the other.

 

It goes without saying that the boat would need to be shipshape, properly equipped, and legal.

 

Clubs like the DBA and the Cruising Association are good for finding crew, some of whom would be more than capable of taking command.

 

Seems a shame to pay for something that people would be glad to do for you.

That is really interesting as I always understood a mooring with a boat wasn't guaranteed, are you saying this is not so??

 

and if so what are the complications of not taking up the mooring the boat is on.

Your understanding is correct - in most cases.

 

In London people will sometimes pay a premium of £100,000 or more to buy a boat with a mooring with no security at all. It's a big gamble.

 

The complication is that the seller, who will himself have paid a large premium, can't "sell" the mooring separately - the landlord will just re-possess it. So he won't sell to you, unless you come up with an elaborate scheme whereby you buy the boat with the mooring, then replace the boat on the mooring with another one.

jUST IN REPLY TO THE FACT THAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT MOVING OVER TO THE CONTINENT WITHIN A COUPLE OF YEARS TO LIVE AND BOAT .

AS ALREADY STATED ,I AM NOT ACTUALLY A BOAT OWNER AT THE MOMENT , BUT AS I WILL BE RETIRING NEXT YEAR , I AM INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A DUTCH TYPE BARGE AS A LEISURE / SEMI LIVEABOARD , BUT AM NOT SURE TO MOOR IT IN FRANCE / HOLLAND OR THE UK.

BUT I HAVE CARRIED OUT A GREAT DEAL OF RESEARCH INTO THIS , ESPECIALLY LOOKING AT BOAT BROKERS IN HOLLAND , AND AFTER TALKING WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE BOUGHT BOATS OVER THERE AND ACTUALLY LIVE THERE , THERE DOES NOT SEEM ANY DOUBT AS LONG AS YOU ARE ARMED WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE , THAT HOLLAND IS THE PLACE TO BUY. IF YOU LOOK AT SOME OF THE SITES BELOW YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN !

I think I heard somewhere that the Dutch government were going to ban the export of their barges. Is this true?

 

 

 

I'm not all that interested in what the Dutch government decides, but this sound much to silly to be possibly true, and I can't see how they can.

 

Next thing you'll hear is that they are going to oblige export of their barges, which would be just as silly.

I dont know where you heard that from but it sounds pretty ludicrous to me , there would be no point financially or any other reason !

Was it 1st April when you were told that? If there were lots of Dutch people interested in ex-working motor vessels they would have bought them. In fact as far as barges are concerned the Dutch themselves were and are more interested in sailing craft such as klippers, but mostly they go for modern motor cruisers. The major reason so many such craft survived the 70s when the Dutch government were paying their skippers to scrap smaller craft and move up to 80m+ was the number of British enthusiasts buying them up.

I must admit when I was told this, I found it hard to believe and the person in question said "So many of the barges were going to UK that the Dutch government was worried about loosing their heritage".

 

The person (A Dutchman) I was talking to imports the Dutch barges, tarts them up then sells them at twice the price he paid for them. Also says that it cost him £1k to get them transported to London.

 

I cannot vouch that what I have been told was/is true.

Not sure about the prices? I met a Dutch couple on a Piper new build barge a couple of months ago. They'd had their barge built in the UK because they said it was more expensive to have it built in Holland.
