I’ve just picked up a sample down lighter holder and led lamp, when I’ve put them together the void required would need to be 55mm. this seems a lot. Is there a shallower led alternative, the led I have is an MR16.

I use the brass ones supplied by the MR16 LED supplier. Google ''Bedazzled''

These holders can be bought from Screwfix also. bizzard.

There are a range of downlighter fittings for the MR16. I normally use the Aurora range.

Many are no deeper than the size of the MR16 itself, but you have to be careful as even LED's expel heat and there should be sufficient space above the light fitting to allow the heat to dissipate and not present a fire risk.

 

If you don't have room, I suggest looking at other formats like G4 fittings.

The other option is not to use 'LED' replacement lamps, as in MR16 etc but to fit an actual LED down light. This kind of thing with a switch offers even more flexibility http://www.scsmicrofreeview.co.uk/scs-led2250-21-172-p.asp and seems widely used in caravans/motor homes.
