David Schweizer Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 It would appear that Gibbo has stopped contributing to the Forum because a joke posted by him was removed by one of the moderators. I did not see the joke so I cannot make any judgement. Despite his sometimes non PC comments, I think the Forum will be a poorer place without Chris Gibson's expert advice on Electrical matters, we are now down from three to only one resident Electrics Expert, so it's all on your shoulders now Snibble.
larkshall Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Methinks the moderators are getting too snip happy on this site. If they have to remove something, they should at least explain why. I suspect that many people probably see posts there one minute and gone another. There also appears to be a trend of blocking some of our more colourful characters. Just my thoughts.
Evo Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 No...I dont buy that...walking from this forum because its too PC... Probabaly had enough of answering the same questions over and over again more like, was just looking for an excuse.

Yes I hope he hasnt gone for good. The world is saturated by pc correct plonkers and we need more people who call a spade a spade as the saying goes rather than people who worry about every comment they make in case it simple isnt pc.....

Moderation on this forum is way more 'forgiving' and lenient than you get on a lot of others.... Sometimes a bit inconsistent maybe but overall just fine....
Sir Nibble Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Gibbo is a fantastic resource and a real loss. I can think of no other member I would sooner share umpteen beers and a notepad with.

Actually Gibbo's joke was about rape and domestic violence. Where do you draw the line? I think the joke was rightly removed. The fact that he went off as a result is his own choice. The world is saturated by pc correct plonkers and we need more people who call a spade a spade as the saying goes rather than people who worry about every comment they make in case it simple isnt pc..... you enjoy jokes about rape and DV too then?

After all most of his information is still here or on his website.
Sir Nibble Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 It is very difficult to have anything approaching a liberal conscience when so many are determined to spot evidence of the mythical "pc brigade" (do you get a uniform?) it reminds me of reds under the bed.
carlt Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 I did see the joke and, though well over the boundaries, according to the CWDF rules, I wouldn't have reported it and feel that some jokes remaining on the joke thread are far more extreme. He told the joke and drew attention to it by setting down the challenge, which a moderator took. Whilst it is a shame that Gibbo feels the freedom to tell adult jokes on a family forum is more important than to talk about boats, boating and waterways, that is his right and we should respect his decision to vote with his feet. I think the number of electrics geeks is not that low, though. Moomin Papa seems to know a bit but maybe doesn't blow his trumpet quite so loudly. (Iirc it was fellatio related humour but I'm rubbish at remembering jokes)
Sir Nibble Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 (Iirc it was fellatio related humour but I'm rubbish at remembering jokes) Never forget a blow job mind.

I entirely agree. I always valued Chris's expertise and advice both on the forum and, when I contacted him, in private e-mails. His absence is a huge loss to this forum. Yes, there are other electrical specialists here but sometimes the counter-arguments that the experts indulged in were interesting in their own right. After all, you don't always get experts agreeing in any walk of life. If a joke (which I didn't see BTW because I was out of the country) was enough to cause this loss of expertise then it is a shame and I, for one, would love to see him back on here............but, that's his choice I guess. What a shame. Roger
David Schweizer Posted October 19, 2011 Author Report Posted October 19, 2011 Actually Gibbo's joke was about rape and domestic violence. Where do you draw the line? I think the joke was rightly removed. The fact that he went off as a result is his own choice. As I said, I did not see the joke, so was unable to make any judgement. If it was as extreem as you are suggesting, then I agree with it's removal. I also agree that Chris's consequent decision to leave was clearly up to him. Interestingly Chris was also prone to making some very un PC comments about Disabled people, and despite protests to the moderators, the observations were not removed. I have my views as to why differing equality issues are dealt with inconsistently on the Forum, but I will keep my views to myself. You will just have to work it out for yourselves.
carlt Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 This was the post for anyone who missed it. As the joke broke the rules that we all signed up to, and Gibbo was obviously aware of that fact, I don't see what other action LM could have taken. See how long this one stays up for... It this gets deleted I'm leaving. My world will not be run by PC girlies. I don't care! Our FAQ's say nothing about p.c. but they do say you agree not to post anything that is 'obscene, profane, sexually oriented' I don't think our site owner, Dan, is a p.c. girly. So Bye bye then!
Popular Post wrigglefingers Posted October 19, 2011 Popular Post Report Posted October 19, 2011 I cannot think of a subject that can't be joked about. Remind me to tell you about the six years in therapy and the related costs after a period of sustained domestic and sexual violence. He thought it was funny too. 9
carlt Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 I cannot think of a subject that can't be joked about. No but there is no shortage of websites that welcome adult humour and no limit to the number of forums you can be a member of. This is not an adult website, it is a family one, and that is made clear in the rules we all agreed to, when we signed up.

granddad Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Hi gibbo You taught me all I know about measuring voltage across a known resisance, battery connection, batteries and voltage sensitive relay - I am most grateful. I know nothing of your other proclivities but the world cannot go backwards. regards ken
Pretty Funked Up Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Actually Gibbo's joke was about rape and domestic violence. Where do you draw the line? I think you should draw the line under the word joke! It was a hypothetical situtaion which ended with a cracking 'punch'line, cant resist the pun
Nine of Hearts Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Well, I been on the receiving end of both DV and false accusations of DV. The latter particularly traumatic as it's frightening how that kind of mud sticks, and how ready people are to believe the worst of someone they've known for years with only an accusation to go on. However... I've been told such jokes, and I've told such jokes. By brother-in-law's dark sense of humour was one of the things which helped me cope at the time. But then I don't set out to control what other people can and cannot say. I think you'll find that behaviour typically resides on the abusive side of the fence, not the passive.

Hear Hear! I agree entirely. As a reasonably competent electrical engineer (retired from National Grid) I thought I knew quite enough to do a safe and effective boat electrical installation. That was until I joined CWDF, started reading Gibbo's posts (plus the splendid arguments discussions with others) and his Smartgauge website. As a result I have learned so much more and will have a better boat in the end. Even some of the non PC comments/opinions could prompt amusing and interesting discussions. I didn't follow many of those perhaps and must have missed the one where he decided to leave the scene however I sincerely hope he can eventually return if only to continue to offer his splendid (if sometimes slightly grumpy!) electrical/electronic systems advice on here. Richard
David Schweizer Posted October 19, 2011 Author Report Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) What about, Smiley Pete,Wotever,RichardHula,Bob18,they seem pretty good too,and there's myself of course ahem!. That may be the case, but none of the people named in your list (I don't even recognise two of them!) ever offered any advice on the alternator, and inverter problems that I was experiencing, the only people who ever tried to help were Gibbo, Sir Snibble, and ChrisW. The problems were eventually solved as a consequence of thier detailed advice, but two of them have gone now. Edited October 19, 2011 by David Schweizer
