How £500,000 Whitchurch canal revamp could look

This is how a £500,000 revamp of a major section of the Shropshire Union Canal could look.

Members of the Whitchurch Waterway Trust have taken the wraps off their proposals to extend the canal and create a new basin with moorings.

The project would bring canal boat users nearer to the town centre and become a tourist attraction.

Plans were available for the public to comment on at the town’s Blackberry Fair at the weekend. Trust members said the scheme was met with a very positive response from residents.

A presentation of the project was also put to Whitchurch Town Council last week and trust members are hoping the authority will support them with funding.

David Torrens, trust member, said: “We were very happy with the positive response we got at the weekend’s event.

“They said they were happy to see something was being done and thought the project was very achievable.

“Our next step is to put together comments we have received and then we will have to look at the design brief.

“We hope to make a planning application soon. I am sure the council will help us as much as they can.”

Trust members estimate construction costs of the basin could reach about £475,000 l.

Comments and suggestions the trust has received so far about the project include a request to consider measures of controlling litter, adjust the shape slightly to make boat manoeuvring easier and provide facilities for moored boats.

The scheme won the backing of trust members at a meeting held last year. Before the meeting members had five potential schemes to consider.

Comments about the proposals can also be sent by email to comments@whitchurchwaterway.org.uk or by post to Hon-Secretary, Whitchurch Waterway Trust, Chemistry Farm, Whitchurch SY13 1BZ.

Perhaps they could get the 'Monty Restoration Crew' to do the Whitchurch Arm once they've completed the Monty restoration... that would be in 2044 or so. I'm sure they'd sort out the Arm with no trouble, and at very little cost, within say 5 years? :P

Plans for a £500,000 revamp of part of the Shropshire Union Canal in Whitchurch will be formally submitted next month.

Members of the Whitchurch Waterway Trust say the plans – to extend the canal and create a new basin and moorings – will be filed by January 15.The project would take the canal closer to the town centre in a move designed to boost tourism in the area. Members have been gathering comments from residents in relation to the project which they say have been generally positive.

Plans were available at the town’s Blackberry Fair recently, while a presentation of the project has also been put to members of Whitchurch Town Council. Well, I suppose that anything to enhance the arm must be applauded.

It is a venture that seems to have started off with high hopes, and an ambitious "phase II", but stalled after the completion of phase I.

I suspect that this latest proposal sets out an exit strategy for the trust, allowing it to abandon its over ambitious plans for reaching the town centre, in favour of a more easily realised plan to simply get through Chemistry bridge and build a basin.

It will allow them to save face and say "see, there was a phase II", to not suggest that there will ever be a phase III into the town, and leave the question of ever restoring the rest of the arm to another generation.

Sounding quite promising.

A better artist's impression of the basin can be seen in this PDF:

And a detailed plan of the new basin here:

Any bets on where boats will reach first - Crickheath Bridge (on the Monty) or this new basin on the Whitchurch Arm..? wink.png

Its quite a walk into Whitchurch from Chemistry Bridge,at the end of the restored section of the arm.For anyone not familiar with the area, the route of the arm into the town has been built on. There is a possible route back to near where the origional basin was. The problem is one of levels .From memory,I think the trust intended to build an inclined plane to overcome this.It would have been a massive civil engineering project. The present plan would only extend the canal a few yards .Pity the potential of this branch was not realised before it was lost forever.
