"Surprise Major" is a bell ringing term i think

 

I have no idea what it means though, i know the phrase from doing crosswords not ringing church bells

It is a particular way of ringing handbells in the English style, ie ringing changes not tunes.

It looks like I can't justify a set of bells for the boat! It takes a minimum of four people.

It is possible for one person to ring four handbells to changes. But even the idea of two baffles me... my poor grey cell has yet to work out how to split itself so each bell knows what it's doing! Certainly the standard way of ringing handbells is that each person has two bells. But if you want to ring handbell peals afloat I'm sure there'll be plenty of people willing to help out... I've seen a number of performances in the Comic. (But don't look at me... I never even mastered plain hunt on 5... I'll stick to tower bells thank you.)
