Water Rat.
Well, they do say you are not a real boater until you have fallen in. So now I am a real boater and have a broken arm to boot!!Did the classic act and fell between the boat and my pontoon, the boat was not tied up tightly enough, so while switching on the gas the boat moved away and down I went, right under, somehow smacking my arm on something hard enough on the way down to break my humerus. ouch does not quite express it!! After being stranded in the water for about half an hour I managed to attract the attention of another moorer and he brought a ladder to help me out.Chris W, a former frequent contributor on here took me to Stoke Manderville Hospital, and here I am. Breaking one's right arm is not great news for a children's face painter so i am out of action for the next few weeks. No boating and no painting. So, take care everyone and be sure your boats are well tied up.

Guest
Bad luck WR as a fellow 'dunker' I know the feeling. Luckily a just trashed my iPhone in the process and didn't break anything attached to my body...
LEO
J, Sorry to hear your news, I did the same changing a gas bottle, one freezing cold November day. Luckily like you a fellow moorer had a ladder handy.I have now invested in a ladder and have tied this to the piling in case the same problem occurs. Hope arm gets better, hope things don't run in 3's for you (Alan's pelvis, your arm ......). Have a virtual bunch of grapes and some flowers. ATB Mike. Bobbybass
You have my huge sympathy !! I fell 12 weeks ago..breaking many ribs on the way... My wife was nearby..but even with her help..and a passer by..it was really difficult to get out... We have a small rope ladder..but with my injury..it was a problem... I did write here...and I'll say it again...we all need to think hard about out MOB procedures....as that 3 feet of water...could be our undoing. All the best for a speedy recovery.... The world awaits...the return..of the painted face. bob
Bob18
Why is that bone called the humerus? Breaking it certainly isn't. Glad you were dragged out OK, make the most of it while still in hospital, they will eventually kick you out for bad behaviour...
scrumpylurcher
Sorry to hear about your problems, the dunking is soon forgotten, but the broken bone is going to remind you for awhile. Hope you are ok to work again soon. Probably not the best time (if any is) I know we have events on the next three weekends to look forward to. Get well soon. Water Rat.
Was hard enough getting out without injuring myself. Good luck and hope you are back in action quickly There was now way i could have climbed out without the ladder. Arm now swelling and turning purple! Was discharged with nothing but a foam sling thing. There is nothing to protect the arm. note to self - take more drugs! Thanks for all the good wishes. GUMPY
Arm now swelling and turning purple! Was discharged with nothing but a foam sling thing. There is nothing to protect the arm. note to self - take more drugs! Much the same as mine when I broke it although they did strap mine to my body with my right hand on my left shoulder so I couldn't use it. Gave it two weeks and then took my boat (15ft wooden cruiser) for a spin, Iver to Braunston and back on my own I was young (23) and its amazing how strong your left arm gets under those circumstances. get well soon

Was discharged with nothing but a foam sling thing. There is nothing to protect the arm. note to self - take more drugs! Thanks for all the good wishes. They tend to chuck you out of hospitals very quick these days. If it plays up....try and get to one of these walkin centres.. They can give you stronger painkillers if needed... While abroad...I tend to buy strong painkillers and antibiotics over the counter (£2.80 for 24 Amoxilin in Spain) NOT that I would take antibiotics for silly stuff...but being boating..it can take a while to get medical attention for seriously infected cuts...etc. A delay last year....nearly cost me my life... Even when I got to hospital...and was admitted...they were reluctant to give me antibiotics for a chest infection...and by the time I saw a specialist.(2 days !!) .and he gave them to me..I had pneumonia..and only 20% lung capacity left.. When I cracked my ribs..I was in the country...and luckily has some strong Codeine..that lasted me a few days before I could move the boat to a road with a bus stop. This is only my own philosphy. Having lived and worked in some very funny countries around the world...I have my own outlook on things. I do not believe that..if in trouble...there are many people to look after me..ie police...politicians...judges..doctors.. But that is..just me.. Do not try this yourself !! bob Edited September 11, 2011 by Bobbybass

Bob18
Going purple - have you pins and needles, or loss of sensation in your right hand? Get yourself to a hospital PDQ, you might have a thrombosis developing (I know, I did, and got treated quickly enough so no lasting problems)

alan_fincher
Ive now got a ladder on my roof, put it on a hour ago Unfortunately, I don't think a ladder on a boat roof would have helped Julie's predicament. What she actually needed was one in the water. That mooring site, only about 20 boats on pontoons, actually has three ladders at least permanently in the water, but none near where her boat is moored, I think. We do seem to be an accident prone lot that moor there though - well, at least some of us do! Julie, I'll make a point of giving Jade a quick external look-over whenever I'm there or passing, until you are back in the swing. Looks like BW need to get that mooring next to you re-let, so you have another boat to pin you in with no possible gaps! Alan
