What a nasty group of people....

There are some really nasty, vicious characters on this forum and I hope I never have the displeasure of meeting them in real life - god only knows what they're like and what they're capable of in reality.

As many of you will remember I asked for help about a joiner to put in two walls in the boat. I had a PM on here from someone suggesting someone they know who is "Great at boat fitting and is a qualified boat fitter. You will need a boat fitter as it is a complex job that a normal joiner or carpenter may have difficulty achieving"

This indiviidual asked me that if I could be a bit more flexible with my timeframes, he would ask this boat fitter for me , to do the work.

I replied and told him that we are more than flexible, however we are looking to move in to the boat in a month's time so need to get a move on with many things. This is the reply I received:

Hi again, yes of course I have his name and number.

He is a tradesman that I have a lot of respect for.

I won't insult him by giving his details to some one who has no idea how complex building a boat is.

I apologise if I seem blunt. The guy I was suggesting to you is a top quality boat fitter. Give him the time he will build you a fantastic boat. Unfortunately with your time scale you are going to be lucky to get something marginally better than a garden shed fit out.

Apologies again

Nowhere in my posts or my messages to ths individual did I ASK for a boat fitter to fit out the entirety of my boat. TWO WALLS.

"I won't insult him by giving his details to some one who has no idea how complex building a boat is." says the user.

So is every boat builder insulted everytime someone buys a boat but didn't know how to fit it out themselves so they paid someone else (them) to do it?

Is a plumber unbelievably p*ssed off because he's had a call for someone to fix some leaky pipes?

Is a builder really annoyed that the person who wants a house can't build it themselves?

Perhaps a mechanic wants to punch that customer in the face who needs a service - after all you're insulting him because you don't know HOW COMPLEX A CAR SERVICE IS.

ARROGANT INDIVIDUALS ON HERE WHO PROVIDE ZERO HELP AND ARE ONLY HERE TO ANNOY AND AGGRAVATE NEED TO BE BANNED.

I was going to pay the guy to do a job..... money is money right?! Or am I missing something here?

This sort of thing has come on here before and when it did I think the general concencus was that tradesmen in all walks of life have their mix of arrogant and opinionated attitude of 'you'll be lucky to get me to work for you'.... it's not just the boating fraternity.

There are plenty of good people out there who will do you a good job and will not give you this type of attitude.

Keep looking and good luck.

Sounds like you got enough information to make a judgement about this individual, the quality of his recommendations and the likely outcome of any job performed by him.

To sum up "avoid".

There are plenty of honest and friendly craftspersons on or connected to people on this forum that you don't have to deal with people like this.

Thanks MJG- I dont even know why im wasting time dwelling on it. Its just so hard to see people being so nasty and inappropriate. I cant understand. If I saw someone needed help and I wanted to help like the above user appeared to, I wouldn't behave that way - I'd go all out for them. Not telling them I knoew of someone who could do the work, then come back (about 5 days later) stating "oh actually.....nah, im not gonna pass your details to him"

And how dare he make judgements about how my boat will look inside.

And relax.

It may well be that the person misread how you had written your reply, it can be very easy to get the wrong end of a point sometimes as there is no facial intonation to go with the words and no lightness or depth of voice.

This forum has a vast amount of knowledge lodged in its members, most if not all who are willing to help with advice and also practical help at no charge.

It is also full of many characters some who you will agree with and some who you wont but they all contribute to make this forum the most interesting, amusing and sometimes heart moving online experience you'll ever have.

Do you know how complicated it is to use this forum, let alone post messages

:)

But Lewis, the chap's first reaction to your post was to proffer help, albeit help which did not materialise. His mouth may have perhaps been in the wrong place but his heart was in the right one. Boaters are idiosyncratic almost by definition (after all, what completely normal person would go ditch-crawling for pleasure?) and one has to make allowances for their ways, even if these can appear abrasive.

ouch!

that kind of behaviour is ,indeed shameful.

i am thames-based so would not know any one in your area that could carry out the woodwork that you require.

i have to agree with you that there are some rather "septic" individuals that post on this forum, however, there are are also many that are informed and civil.

i am sure that some one more local to you could put you in touch with a suitable woodworker, please dont be upset or disheartened by the views of some one who is inadequate and impolite.

He was blunt with the truth. He even apologised for being blunt. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

You poor lamb. Get over it.

Taste of your own medicine then.....I apologise for being blunt.

It seems that there are a few of you like this because you've clearly got nothing better to do , what with being bored out your heads, being sat in a metal tin in a canal all day. Perhaps if you had something more worthwhile in your life you woudn't be this bitter. Or perhaps its the fact that you didn't achieve much with your lives' that have made you this way?

Don't worry deleted, I'll get over it and I'm by FAR no poor lamb.

Sounds like someone who has no idea about the simplicity of fitting out a boat, to a 'qualified boatfitter'.

Tradesmen make their money because customers don't have the time, inclination or ability to understand the complexity of the trade in question.

I think someone has lost a tradesman some paid work. He can't have that much respect for him.

His heart wasnt in the right place at all. It wasnt like he'd asked that guy and the guy just said he was too busy to do the work. This user made out that there was a boat fitter who could do the work. When I simply mentioned that i am moving on to the boat in a month, the user for some reason, took offence to this and then withdrew his offer of help under the guise "i won't insult the boat fitter by referring him to someone for work who knows nothing about boats"

WHY THE HELL NOT!? :banghead: *FUMING BLOODY FUMING*

I find your reaction much more offensive than his offer and subsequent reply.

Exactly! If people knew how to fit out boats themselves and/or wanted to do it themselves, then there would be no BOAT FITTING BUSINESS! Or any other businesses for that matter.

What a fool, seriously.

However, as someone else mentioned, yes there are helpful people here. Off the top of my head the names DeanS and Julynian spring to mind and it's people like them that make coming to this forum a pleasure and I'd like to extend a big thanks again to those.

However, I wish the other leeches would just do one!

But hey ho, I'm now in the 'nasty, viscous' category, which is frankly laughable :D

When did I say that? And I wasn't just talking about the user that PM'd me.... there have been others who have been a constant strain on my temper whenever asking questions.

The most furious I ever got on the internet was when someone suggested lasagne and chips. Both at once. On the same plate! The idiot. Can you imagine? I certainly gave him a piece of my mind.

As if I'd eat that. The cretin.

Lasagne and chips is good ;) with a slice of garlic bread too....
