Smokey LPW2

Rod a mod from Tod

From reading a few posts on here it would appear Listers seem to be a bit on the smokey side, so i guess i am looking for a bit of reassurance here.

On starting the engine i usually get a quick puff of black smoke followed by decreasing shades of grey until it becomes what is described, i think, as blue type smoke, quite faint but enough to notice, perhaps like someone blowing out smoke after a drag on a fag. After about 15-30 mins cruising when the engine has heated up and we have established a decent cruising speed the smoke disappears until we have to wait at, or go through a lock and the engine will be idling until it is time to pull off when the descending shades of grey smoke process starts again. Is this fairly normal for what i think is a 20yr old engine (please see below) or is it time to think of getting something replaced.

I am basing the age of the engine from Alan Fishers thread on dating Lister engines from the serial code. Mine being 41-0006-LPW2A-902 with the 41, according to the manual, being the year code and as per AF adding 50.

Your smoking Lister is probably caused by glazed bores or worn piston rings. However, before taking any drastic action, ensure that you have the right level of the correct grade of engine oil. They are prone to a little smoke if incorrectly oiled. I would also suggest giving it a good hard run against the flow on a river. Nothing like a good blast to clear it out. If the smoke persists get your spanners out, but only when it smokes as bad as a Gardner!
