Gearbox Cable Adjustment

Featured Posts

Greetings All,

On River Lea at present returning from Ware festival. Slight gearbox problem - I hope!!!! When the combined throttle/gear lever is moved ahead or astern the gear box doesn't cut in until the engine revs are quite high. I assume I need to adjust the gearbox cable(make it shorter???). There are threaded rods with locknuts at the gearbox end and control end. I have slackened the nuts but the rods at each end resist being turned into the adjuster part at the end of the rods.

Advice appreciated

Thanks

You have to remove the split pin, and take the end out of the lever, and rotate the brass bit.

You do this at one end only (doesn't matter which end).

You can't slacken the lock nuts, and rotate the whole cable inner!!

You don't say what gearbox it is?

If you get the opportunity to moor or anchor, disconnect the gearbox linkage from the gearbox and check when gear is engaged (moving the lver on the gearbox manually) that you have drive without revving too much.

It is possible it is a gearbox problem (eg too low oil level) rather than linkage!

If this just happened then what I am about say will not apply but if it has always done it then it may be a throttle cable problem.

Many (not all) controls use a spring loaded anchor for the throttle cable. During the initial lever movement the throttle cable anchor moves under the influence of the spring rather than open the throttle. This allows the gear to select before the throttle opens.

The spring mechanism may have to be removed and reversed in some cases because it is designed that way to allow for pull to open and push to open throttles. If it is not reversed when needed the engine will tend to rev before the gears engage.

The throttle cable is adjusted for length with the lever on the engine held at idle and the control lever set to slow ahead or astern. This will compress the spring as the lever is returned to neutral.
