Idiot's Guide to fishing

Featured Posts

I haven't been fishing for about 35 years and can't remember anything beyond which way round to hold the rod.

Meanwhile, our youngest (8) is quite keen to learn.

I know that other boaters at our mooring are keen to lend a hand & offer advice & help, but if anyone here can recommend a good book I'd be really grateful.

Cheers!

Ask at your local tackle shop for a basic float rod setup...I bought my very first rod/reel combo for under £30 and I haven't looked back since.

As for a book? I wouldn't bother....when I first started as a total beginner, I found the folks on Anglers Net forum to be an absolute mine of information....

Since a fishing topic has been started, can any fisherman answer this one...?

WHAT do you see in fishing???

I watch these guys sitting on the edge of the canal, staring at the end of their long black rods...for hours...not moving...one guy was even there while the sun was going down????? I have never seen anyone catch anything....? Cmon...own up...you're all just sitting with yer netbooks, a dongle, a battery and an invertor...checking the ...fishing...forums.......right?

ps...I can understand deep sea fishing, beach fishing, pier fishing, trout fishing...but canal fishing looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO boring :)

The title's right - but the review is quite telling. Thanks for the link, though.

Thanks - I'll have a poke around.

Hi,

Get a copy of 'Mr Crabtree goes fishing'. My brother got one 60 years ago and it passed to me. Taught us all we needed to know to catch freshwater fish around Newport Pagnell all those years ago.

Not sure what Mr C. and his son Peter would make of all the modern gear anglers now need.

Leo.

PS - Still got the book, the coloured plates are works of art.

To the OP, i wouldnt ask to many anglers nowadays ( most are to commercialised) , IMO its not angling as such, more like lobbing a lump of paste/pellets/boilie etc into a lake and sitting waiting for the fish to find it, no skill there.

I was speaking to a chap the other day, this goes to show how it is nowadays, he didnt even know what a LIFT METHOD was, , but he knew what a METHOD feeder is, he didnt beleive me when i told him i had caught carp upto 20lb on this rig, sometimes upto 6 in a day, while he sits for days without a fish, just to live in hope to catch a 30lb fish.

I would go for as suggested and get Mr Crabtree`s book, it was the first book i ever read and i got all i needed to mnow from it, teaches you the skills you need, and how to find fish, catch them etc etc. Although with saying all that there are some hald decent web sites tht will help out.

Going to get a centrepin next week.............whats a centrepin i hear from some

Folk who dont understand fishing and think its boring, give it a try and you will understand.

That's an interesting point you raise W+T

I went fishing with my son (who is 30 and has been fishing with me since he was a boy) at the start of this season. He has focused on carp fishing for several years with the full multi-rod set up using spods and method feeders with boilies.

When it came to our latest trip when we were fishing for 'silver fish' (roach etc) he found he had completely lost his basic skills. Couldn't remember how to use a hook tyer to tie on a spade end hook. Couldn't remember how to tie a light hooklength onto 3lb mainline and couldn't remember how to shot a waggler.

When I go carp fishing I am perfectly happy to fish the lift rig or to freeline but when I go carp fishing with him I have to have him show me how to set up these complex rigs

A stick of dynamite solves all problems.

Sue (anti fishing)

...which reminds me of;

A Park Ranger in the Appalachians comes across a Hillbilly lobbing sticks of dynamite into a river, and then collecting the resulting dead fish. He walks over as the Hillbilly is lighting another stick and says, "after what I've seen you just do, I could have you put away for five years". The Hillbilly just hands him the lit stick of dynamite and replies, "So, you gonna talk about your job, or you gonna fish?".

I guess its all about new easyer methods, advanced even if you want, but then wheres the skill/fun in this, not old myself, well 37 actualy but hey ho, these rigs are just modified link ledger half the time i reckon, like the old bolt rig even.

Am i getting old to quick

I’ve been fishing for over 40 years and have taught my 3 sons to fish.

I still fish in the so called old fashion ways.

To me the enjoyment is in not catching fish but in the pleasure of trying too.

I do not think its fishing when useing equipment or methods that guarantee you fish, you may as save you money and go to the fish mongers.

On the other hand to caught a fish by skill that enjoyment.

When I first went fishing I had bait on a hook, tied to a line, at the end of a stick....just like these anglers I see now, on the canals, only their stick is much longer and made of carbon fibre, not a bit of bamboo, nicked from the allotments.

What goes around comes around...

Taking "equipment" to extremes, explosives are very effective for catching fish

LOL :)

trouble is that it's a reductive argument you are using. One could say the same about canal boating - what's the fecking point - I could walk faster, you are imprisoned in a steel 6 foot 10 inch steel cell....... and as for worshiping at the feet of past boatpersons who probably only ever wanted NOT to do what they had to do to feed their familty..........or playing "superhistoric boat person" ready to quote the number and shape of rivets used on a 1897 Josher bow etc etc.... well don't get me started. :)

I can understand boating on the high sea but in a dirty ditch?

A test of a true angler or fisherman in my mind is "can he imagine or can he derive pleasure from catching even such lowly regarded fish as minnows if the situation demands" if yes tick, if no then don't tick.

It's a deep rooted male instict to hunt and like it or not, fishing is a form of hunting instinct expression however it's practised. How do you describe an instinct? do that and you reveal why the chaps fishing a canal looking miserable (to you, the observer) are doing it.

What's the instinct in boating? is there one? - possibly - exploration maybe? connection with wildlife? trying to be "free"??.......I dunno but I bet there is one?? why else would people** crawl about slowly in a dirty ditch with a piece of kit that costs >£5K per annum to run and rots and depreciates and gives you nothing but hassle and overhead.

** Excludes peoples who are doing it cos it's their only reasonable form of "inexpensive", or independant housing available.

Hi.

Firstly, shame about all the immature comments when someone is asking for help, reading this you would think everyone was a 13 yr old, but being a boating forum, i suspect the average is round 40. Seriously, read what your writing, your not like it on the water, so don't be a nasty little bitter whiner on here, it's not somewhere to take out your problems on other people. Thankyou.

Now then!!

Ive been fishing over 35 years, there are a few good books on basic fishing, tho i couldn't remember any off hand lol, (as its been a long time since ive needed one), so i hunted around a bit.

This seems ok

Better than books, i would say you will learn much more by watching videos/dvd's, there's tons to be downloaded at pirate bay (ive downloaded almost all of these),

Hope that helps a bit, any thing else, just message me, and next time your down south nr London, gimme a shout, i'll be happy to spend a day showing you stuff.
