You have been warned!

Police prepared for waterways festival Burton Mail 19/07/2011 08:00

POLICE are gearing up for a mass influx to a major canal festival set to hit Burton — and are warning visitors to ensure their fun is not ruined by thieves. Staffordshire Police’s community officers will be joined by a team of volunteer special constables to cover the Waterways Festival, which runs at Shobnall Fields from July 29 to 31.

Burton’s top cop said he hoped the Inland Waterways Association-run event would ‘showcase the best of Burton’ but said a flyer officers would be handing out to visitors would remind them to be on guard against thieves. Chief Inspector Phil Fortun is urging visitors to keep their boat or caravan keys in a safe place, fit and use mortice locks or bolts to secure easily accessible windows, remove keys from locked windows and ensure no valuables were left in view.

Meanwhile visitors are urged to ensure personal possessions were kept secure while cyclists should lock their bikes through the frame to an immovable object and secure any removable parts. Chief Insp Fortun said: “We are expecting thousands of people from around the country coming to Burton and it’s a great opportunity to showcase the town in a positive light. We will be participating fully with an operation combining high-visibility reassurance with a focus around preventing crime and detecting any crimes that are reported. With that number of people arriving and staying in boats, caravans and tents there’s always the potential for a small minority to prey on those who don’t leave their property secure. We will be doing all we can in our preparation before the event to make sure it passes without a hitch. It will primarily be local neighbourhood officers from Shobnall and surrounding areas, and we will be making full use of the valuable assistance of special constables, who are worth their weight in gold to us. Our main concern is property crimes but obviously at an event where alcohol will be on sale there’s the potential for people to overdo it, but I’m confident I have sufficient officers on hand to ensure that won’t be a problem.”
