The spec that you have quoted though is quite old fashioned and may not be shown on the bottles. As far as I can tell it is now superseded by Dexron ATF but this might be worth checking with some marine gearbox specialists. Roger

At the time I did the research and used Dexron III ATF.
Mac of Cygnet
I've not changed my gearbox oil in 5 years (2500 hours), mainly because the drain plug is horribly inaccessible. BUT it's not moved down the dipstick at all in that time, and is still perfectly clear (and pink). What, if any, awful thing is likely to happen because of this lackadaisical attitude? Mac I change the gearbox oil on our technodrive each season, and the ATF that comes out is as clean as the new stuff. My car (auto transmission ) uses ATF, which is now 15000 miles overdue a change. Naughty but true. I have been told that if a sample of ATF is dropped onto a paper towel, is still red, and spreads out on the paper, then it is good. If it congeals on the paper, and looks like drinking chocolate,it is knackered. I reiterate, this is what I was told, and have no idea if it is correct. I think ATF is hygroscopic, which is a good reason to change it often (if indeed it is hygroscopic.) ps change it with a pump, that is what we do with the technocrap box. Dignity
As ever folks thanks for the help.Even the ZF Hurth website is vague (suffix A) everything seems to be Dextron ll or lll.Happy to go with the lll.Just spent the morning doing the rest of the service,I'm pooped no wonder people pay mechanics, must be getting old!.In my experiance you can quite happily ignore servicing any machine,so long as you don't mind large bills and inconvience at some vague point in the future. Theo
I think that this would sit more happily in "Boat Building and Maintenance" so I shall shove it in that direction... N
